If you are planning to skip Monday and wait for iOS 27.1, understand what you are waiting for: Apple has not published an iOS 27.1, has not dated one, and has not published a single word about how iOS 27 itself will roll out beyond the date.
iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14 as a free update. Apple has given a date and a release candidate build number. There is no release time, no download size, no free-space requirement, and no statement that the rollout is staged.

The paperwork that usually informs this decision is missing
Every release cycle, the case for waiting is built from Apple’s own documents: the running list of what each update fixed, the security notes, and the support page that describes the update mechanics. All three are absent or stale this week.

That last row is the tell. Apple has published marketing pages and press releases for six new products and has not yet published the support library that goes with them. The manuals and the update notes normally land alongside the software.
What waiting would actually get you
Several of the features people would wait for have already been dated by Apple to something after Monday, and none of those dates is attached to a version number.
- Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, which Apple dates to October
- Messages Suggestions and the Passwords security alerts that can update a weak password, both described only as coming in a future software update
- The SynthID watermark for edited images, dated later this year and applied to most edited images rather than all
- The redesigned Health app, dated later this year, in United States English first, and requiring an Apple Intelligence iPhone
- Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch, which covers Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Sound Recognition, dated to a beta late in 2026
The only 27.1 label Apple has published anywhere in this cycle is Xcode 27.1 beta, the developer tool needed to build apps for iPhone Duo, which Apple says is coming later this month. Apple has not tied that to any iPhone software release, and the Duo does not ship until Friday, October 23.
Waiting is a decision you have to make actively
The one update mechanic Apple has published is generic and old. Its wording, from the support document last touched in December 2025, is that with Automatically Install turned on, “iPhone downloads and installs the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi.”
In other words, doing nothing is not the same as waiting. If you want to stay on iOS 26 past Monday, the automatic update settings are what you need to look at, and Apple’s published steps predate iOS 27 by nine months, so the screens may not match once the update ships.
The strongest published argument for each side
For updating on Monday: the software is finished, the release candidate has been in developers’ hands since September 9, and Apple’s three performance claims all point the same way, with app launches up to 30 percent faster, Photos loading up to 70 percent faster after capture and AirDrop up to 80 percent faster.
For waiting: Apple labels Siri AI a beta on every platform it ships on, subjects it to daily usage limits that vary by feature and system demand, and says in a footnote that expanded access to those features will be available for a fee in the future. It has published no security notes for the release, which is the one document a cautious updater normally reads first.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a release time or time zone for Monday, a download size, a free-space requirement, an install time, any description of a phased or regional rollout, or any indication of whether the shipping build carries the same number as release candidate 24A435. It has published no date, version number or feature list for a first point release, and nothing about returning to iOS 26 afterwards.
iOS 27 is free from Monday, September 14. Until Apple publishes an About iOS 27 Updates document or a security notes page, the question of whether to wait has no Apple-sourced answer, and anyone offering you one is guessing. Our event recap covers what else lands this week.
