Every iPhone from the iPhone 11 up, plus the iPhone SE from the second generation onward, can install iOS 27 on Monday, September 14. What that install gives you then splits three ways, and the split does not follow the model years most people expect: it runs straight through the middle of the iPhone 15 generation, and again through the middle of the iPhone 17 lineup.
Tier one is the redesign, the speed work and the app features. Tier two adds Apple Intelligence and the Siri AI beta, and starts at the iPhone 15 Pro. Tier three is a short list of iPhones that run Apple’s advanced on-device model, and it excludes every iPhone 16, Pro models included. Our iOS 27 release date roundup has the confirmed dates.
Key facts: the three tiers
| Tier | iPhones Apple lists | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Runs iOS 27 | iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later) | Liquid Glass slider, faster app launches, Photos, Safari, Mail, Wallet, Health, accessibility, child safety |
| 2. Apple Intelligence | iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models and later | Siri AI beta, Visual Intelligence, Image Playground, Genmoji, Spatial Reframing, Extend, Clean Up, Call Context |
| 3. Advanced on-device model | iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo | Siri voice customization for pitch, speed, tone and accent, plus improved on-device Dictation |
Tier one: every iPhone that runs iOS 27
Apple’s iOS 27 page lists iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro Max and 18 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, 17 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 and 17e, iPhone 16 Pro Max, 16 Pro, 16 Plus, 16 and 16e, iPhone 15 Pro Max, 15 Pro, 15 Plus and 15, iPhone 14 Pro Max, 14 Pro, 14 Plus and 14, iPhone 13 Pro Max, 13 Pro, 13 and 13 mini, iPhone 12 Pro Max, 12 Pro, 12 and 12 mini, iPhone 11 Pro Max, 11 Pro and 11, and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later).

Read that list carefully, because the common shorthand of iPhone 12 and later is wrong. The 2019 iPhone 11 family is on it, and so is the 2020 iPhone SE. If your iPhone is older than the 11, Monday changes nothing.
Tier one is not a consolation prize. It includes the Liquid Glass slider that runs from ultraclear to fully tinted, sharper app icons, Safari tab topics and Notify Me, the rebuilt Mail search ranking, digital passes made by scanning physical loyalty cards, the updated Apple Pay checkout, perimenopause notifications in Cycle Tracking, GymKit on iPhone, AirPods Custom EQ, the new accessibility tools and the redesigned parental controls.
The performance claims land here too, and Apple measured the headline one on the oldest supported hardware: app launches up to 30 percent faster on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, tested against iOS 26.4.2 between April and May 2026.
Tier two: the Apple Intelligence iPhones
Apple’s device list is all iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus run iOS 27 but do not get Apple Intelligence, which is the single most confusing line in the whole release, because the phones sat side by side in the same 2023 lineup.
Tier two unlocks Siri AI in beta, Visual Intelligence including the new Siri mode in the Camera, Write with Siri in Mail and Messages, Image Playground with photorealistic output, Genmoji, Spatial Reframing, the Extend tool, the enhanced Clean Up, Call Context during business calls, event creation from a description in Calendar, and shortcut creation from a description.
It comes with strings. Apple says features relying on server models are subject to daily usage limits that vary by feature, request complexity and system demand, that increased access comes with most iCloud+ plans, and that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future.
Tier three: the advanced on-device model
The shortest list is iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air, joined by iPad models with M4 or later and 12GB or more of unified memory, Macs with M3 or later and 12GB or more, and Apple Vision Pro with M5. Apple ties two features to it: Siri voice customization across pitch, speed, tone and accent, and the improved on-device Dictation model.
Note what is absent. An iPhone 16 Pro Max sits in tier two, while the non-Pro iPhone Air sits in tier three, so the line is drawn by silicon generation rather than by Pro branding. Our explainer on the A20 Pro covers the chip at the top of that list, and our iPhone Duo roundup covers the other new device on it.
The gates that have nothing to do with your iPhone
| Gate | What it holds back |
|---|---|
| EU | Siri AI not initially available on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS; Mac and Vision Pro do get it |
| China | Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features, pending regulatory requirements |
| Language | Apple Intelligence covers 16 languages; Siri AI is English first, with five more in October |
| English only | Call Context, Messages and Mail Suggestions, and intelligent file naming |
| United States only | Apple Cash bill splitting in Wallet, and Local Lists in Maps |
| EEA | Apple Pay Tap to Share, which otherwise needs an iPhone 12 or later |
| Subscription and hub | Home camera clip descriptions and search need iCloud+, a home hub and an Apple Intelligence device |
| Carrier | iPhone Handoff support varies by carrier |
One last distinction is worth making, because it catches people every year. The variable aperture, the manual Pro controls, Apple Reference Image and three Live Activities in the Dynamic Island are iPhone 18 Pro hardware features, not iOS 27 features. No update will add them to an older phone.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a date for Siri AI in the EU on iPhone, a date for the Messages Suggestions and Passwords features it labels as coming later, pricing for the expanded access to server features, or the memory thresholds that put an iPhone in tier three rather than tier two. It publishes the device lists, and for iPhone that is where the reasoning stops.
iOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14, alongside iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. The next dated milestone is October, when Siri AI adds French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
