Plenty of iPads live on a coffee table, a kitchen counter or a kid’s lap, and never touch Apple Intelligence. For those iPads, iPadOS 27 on Monday, September 14 is still a real update: a reworked Liquid Glass with a tint slider you control, faster Messages sync, a rebuilt Shared Albums, a redesigned Screen Time and a set of accessibility additions.
The catch is that Apple has not published a per-feature requirements table for iPad. So the honest way to sort iPadOS 27 is into three piles: what Apple describes without any hardware condition, what Apple explicitly ties to an Apple Intelligence iPad, and the items Apple has labelled neither way.
Key facts
| Item | What Apple publishes |
|---|---|
| Release | Monday, September 14, 2026, free update |
| Compatible families | iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad, iPad mini, per Apple’s footnote |
| Apple Intelligence bar | iPad Pro and Air with M1 or later, iPad mini with A17 Pro |
| Siri AI | Beta, English first, not initially available in the EU on iPadOS |
| iPad performance claim | External drive browsing and transfers up to 5x faster |
| Per-feature requirements list | Not published |
What arrives with no hardware condition attached
- Liquid Glass gets more uniform refraction and better contrast, app icons get sharper, and a new Settings slider runs the whole look from ultra clear to fully tinted.
- Photos adds slideshows with customisable duration, transitions and music, a change Apple calls out on the iPad page specifically.
- iCloud Shared Albums move to full resolution, accept more file types, add emoji reactions and per-album activity feeds, allow temporary albums, and open to Android and Windows viewers through iCloud.com.
- Messages syncs faster, with better missed-message notifications and unread counts.
- Screen Time is redesigned, with Ask to Buy, Ask to Browse, Time Allowances for entertainment, games and social media, Schedules, and passcode change notifications. Communication Safety now blurs gore and violent content as well as nudity.
- Custom EQ arrives in AirPods settings, which is worth knowing if the AirPods 5 that shipped this week are the pair you use with the iPad.
- Wi-Fi Assist becomes Connectivity Assist, per Apple’s device management documentation, and Apple describes smoother Wi-Fi to cellular transitions and an optimised CPU scheduler.
What needs an Apple Intelligence iPad
| Feature | The condition Apple attaches |
|---|---|
| Siri AI | Beta, English to start, Apple Intelligence iPad, not initially in the EU |
| Image Playground and Genmoji | Apple Intelligence device, with daily usage limits on server-backed generation |
| Spatial Reframing, Extend, enhanced Clean Up | Listed under Apple Intelligence in apps |
| Visual Intelligence in screenshots | Apple Intelligence device, supported English variant |
| Bill splitting with Apple Cash | United States only, Siri AI required, iPad mini A17 Pro or iPad M1 and later |
| Home clip descriptions and clip search | Home hub, iCloud+, and an Apple Intelligence device |
The features Apple has labelled neither way
A handful of changes read like they lean on the same models, yet Apple’s pages attach no device requirement to them. We are listing them as unlabelled rather than assuming.

The speed claims that will not apply to your iPad
Apple’s one iPad performance number is the 5x faster external drive browsing and transfer figure, and its own footnote says that was measured on an 11-inch iPad Pro with M4, a USB4 SSD and 10,000 JPEGs. A 9th generation iPad with a small flash drive is not the machine in that test.
The other headline numbers in the 27 releases, the 30 percent faster app launches, 70 percent faster Photos loading and 80 percent faster AirDrop, were all measured by Apple on iPhones. It has published no iPad equivalents, as our rundown of everything announced on September 9 shows.
What Apple has not said
Apple has published nothing about Stage Manager, external display behaviour or Apple Pencil in iPadOS 27, which are exactly the areas a second-screen iPad owner would ask about. Silence is not a statement that they are unchanged, and we are not treating it as one.
There is also no consumer note listing what an older iPad gains or loses, no release time, and no word on how long the update takes to install. Apple confirmed the date and little else, as the live blog from Apple Park recorded on the day.
iPadOS 27 is due on Monday, September 14. If the iPad in question rarely leaves a shelf, the practical move is to plug it in and let it update overnight, because Apple has not published how long the install runs on older hardware.
