Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro at up to 24 hours of typical use, 36 hours of video playback and 33 hours of streamed video. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rated at up to 30 hours of typical use, 45 hours of video playback and 40 hours of streamed video. All six figures come from Apple’s tech specs.
Apple’s press release only quoted the video playback numbers and the Pro Max’s 30-hour figure. The tech specs add typical use for the smaller phone and streamed video for both, which gives a fuller picture than the 45-hour claim we covered on launch day.

The Pro Max leads on all three by between six and nine hours. Apple’s press release notes that the video playback figures apply to the eSIM-only model, so the ratings in countries with a SIM tray may differ; Apple has not published separate numbers for those.

What typical use means
Typical use is Apple’s broadest rating and the closest to a real day: a mix of activities rather than one task running until the battery dies. Apple’s tech specs give 24 hours for the Pro and 30 for the Pro Max but do not describe the exact mix of tasks behind the figure.

Video playback versus streamed video
Video playback measures a file stored on the phone playing back on a loop, with no network traffic. Streamed video pulls the same kind of content over a connection, which costs more energy, so the streamed figure is always lower: 33 hours versus 36 on the Pro, 40 versus 45 on the Pro Max.
The gap between the two ratings is three hours on the Pro and five on the Pro Max. Apple’s tech specs do not say whether the streamed figure assumes Wi-Fi or cellular, and Apple has not published which network the test uses.

How the Pro compares with last year
Apple’s press release says the iPhone 18 Pro roughly matches the battery life of last year’s iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is the clearest year-on-year statement Apple has made. Apple’s tech specs page for the 18 Pro does not repeat the 17 Pro ratings, so we are not quoting exact figures for the older phones.
Apple’s press release also lists a C2 modem that uses 15 percent less energy than the C1X, and a new vapor chamber attached to the A20 Pro with about three times the cooling performance of the prior design. Apple has not published how much of the battery gain comes from each.
Charging the battery back up
Apple’s tech specs list up to 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a 60W USB-C adapter, and 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 35W adapter plus MagSafe. MagSafe and Qi2 both top out at 25W. Apple’s press release adds that five minutes on a cable gives the Pro Max about seven hours of video playback.
Apple has not published a battery capacity in milliampere-hours or watt-hours for either phone. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, and both models arrive Friday, September 18.
