An iPhone 16 Pro owner who moves to the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets 18 more hours of rated video playback, 45 against 27, a screen that grows from 6.3 to 6.9 inches, and a telephoto that reaches 8x optical-quality instead of 5x. The cost is 50 extra grams and $1,299 for 256GB, twice the storage the 16 Pro started with.
This is a two-generation jump and a size jump at once. Apple’s own performance comparisons for the A20 Pro are stated against the A19 Pro, not the A18 Pro, so this guide sticks to what Apple’s tech specs and compare page list for each phone and flags where a two-year figure does not exist.

Size, weight and display: 6.3 to 6.9 inches
Apple’s tech specs put the 18 Pro Max at 163.4 x 78.0 x 8.75 mm and 249 grams. The 16 Pro, per Apple’s compare page, is 149.6 x 71.5 x 8.25 mm and 199 grams. That is 13.8 mm taller, 6.5 mm wider, half a millimeter thicker and 50 grams heavier.

Both displays are 460 ppi OLED with ProMotion up to 120Hz and Always-On. Resolution rises from 2622 x 1206 to 2868 x 1320, and peak outdoor brightness goes from 2000 nits on the 16 Pro to 3000 nits, with peak HDR at 1600 nits on both. If the 6.9-inch size is the sticking point, the 18 Pro vs 18 Pro Max guide weighs the two new sizes against each other.
Battery: the 18-hour gap
Apple rates the 16 Pro for up to 27 hours of video playback and 22 hours of streamed video, with 85 hours of audio. The 18 Pro Max is rated for 45 hours of video playback, 40 hours streamed and 30 hours of typical use.
Apple’s tech specs give the 18 Pro Max 50 percent in about 15 minutes with a 60W adapter and up to 25W over MagSafe or Qi2. For the 16 Pro, Apple lists MagSafe at up to 25W with a 30W adapter, and Apple’s compare page shows 22W for the 16 Pro Max; Apple has not published a wired fast-charge time for the 16 Pro in the same form. Our battery and charging explainer covers the new phone’s figures in full.
Cameras: variable aperture, 8x reach and a new front camera
The main camera on both is 48MP at 24 mm, but the 18 Pro Max adds a variable aperture with four stops, f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, where the 16 Pro is fixed at f/1.78. Apple’s press release pairs it with manual aperture and shutter speed controls, Smart Focus subject tracking and faster Night mode. How the variable aperture works is explained separately.
The telephoto is the second big change. The 16 Pro uses a 12MP 5x tetraprism at 120 mm f/2.8, with optical zoom steps of 0.5x, 1x, 2x and 5x. The 18 Pro Max uses a 48MP 4x tetraprism at 100 mm f/2.8 with a 12MP optical-quality 8x crop at 200 mm, for steps of 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x. You lose the 5x step and gain 4x and 8x. The Ultra Wide is the same 48MP 13 mm f/2.2 on both, and the front camera moves from a 12MP TrueDepth to an 18MP Center Stage camera with autofocus, both at f/1.9.
Chip, connectivity and materials
The 18 Pro Max’s A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip, with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. The 16 Pro’s A18 Pro has a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. Apple’s stated gains, a GPU up to 40 percent faster and double the AI processing, are measured against the A19 Pro; Apple has not published an A18 Pro comparison.
Both phones have Wi-Fi 7 and USB 3 at 10 Gb/s. Bluetooth moves from 5.3 to 6, and the 18 Pro Max adds the N1 wireless chip with Thread and the C2 modem; the A20 Pro explainer has the chip architecture. The 16 Pro is titanium; the 18 Pro Max is an aluminum unibody with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. Both are IP68.

Is the two-year jump worth it?
If you chose the 16 Pro for its size, the smaller iPhone 18 Pro gets the same chip and cameras at $1,199 and 211 grams, and our iPhone 18 Pro launch roundup has its full spec sheet. The Pro Max case rests on battery and screen: 45 hours of video against 27 is the biggest battery jump in this series, and it is the reason to accept the 50 grams.
The 18 Pro Max is $1,299 for 256GB, $1,499 for 512GB, $1,899 for 1TB and $2,499 for 2TB on Apple’s Store page, or $54.12 a month over 24 months. The monthly pricing is broken down here.
