iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max: What the $100 Gap Buys, and When to Spend It on Storage

At matching storage, iPhone 18 Pro Max costs exactly $100 more than iPhone 18 Pro, and that $100 buys two things: six more hours of rated use and 0.6 inch of screen. Nothing else on the spec sheet changes, so if neither of those is what you want, the same $100 is better spent on storage.

Both phones run the same A20 Pro chip, carry the same three 48MP cameras, charge at the same speeds, use the same aluminium unibody with Ceramic Shield 2, and come in the same four colours. This is a size decision with a price attached, not a feature decision.

Key facts: the two phones at the same storage

The gap stays $100 at every tier

StorageiPhone 18 ProiPhone 18 Pro MaxDifference
256GB$1,199$1,299$100
512GB$1,399$1,499$100
1TB$1,799$1,899$100
2TB$2,399$2,499$100

The size premium never compounds, which is useful to know: the answer you reach at 256GB is the same answer at 2TB. What does compound is storage, at $200 for the first step and $400 for the second.

Where the money goes further

Put the two upgrades side by side on the same budget and the choice sharpens. Spending $100 moves you up a size. Spending $200 doubles the storage on the phone you already picked.

What you spend on a $1,199 ProWhat you get
$100 to the Pro MaxSix more hours of typical use, nine more hours of video, 0.6 inch of screen
$100 to the Pro MaxAlso 38 g more weight and 13.4 mm more height in your pocket
$200 to 512GBDouble the room for 4K120 Dolby Vision and 48MP capture
$300 to a 512GB Pro MaxBoth, at $1,499

On Apple’s own ratings that $100 is priced fairly. The Pro works out at about $50 for each rated hour of typical use, the Pro Max at about $43, which is our arithmetic on Apple’s figures. If you charge nightly and never see the bottom of the battery, that maths is academic and the smaller phone wins on how the two feel in one hand.

The $100 has been coming back at trade-in

There is a second-hand argument for the larger phone. Apple does not publish a per-model trade-in table, but the values recorded for its previous Pro pairs show the same $100 step: iPhone 17 Pro Max at $885 against iPhone 17 Pro at $785, and iPhone 16 Pro Max at $610 against iPhone 16 Pro at $510. Two generations back the gap was $85, with iPhone 15 Pro Max at $455 and iPhone 15 Pro at $370.

So on the published record the size premium has largely survived one and two years of ownership. Storage has not: the recorded values are single figures per model, with no separate figure published for a higher capacity. Treat both as estimates, and remember that every one of those iPhone values moved down on September 9.

Who should buy which

  • Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if you use the phone one-handed, if 211 g against 249 g matters to you, or if you would rather have 512GB than a bigger screen.
  • Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you shoot long video, travel on days without a charger, or read and navigate on the phone enough to want the 6.9-inch panel.
  • Buy neither on size alone if you are choosing between a Pro Max at 256GB and a Pro at 512GB. They are $100 apart, and the storage cannot be changed later.

What Apple has not said

Apple publishes rated hours rather than real-world battery life, and it has not published a per-device AppleCare+ price for either phone. It also publishes no trade-in value tied to a storage tier, so the $200 step to 512GB has no confirmed resale premium behind it. Both US models are eSIM-only and neither ships with a charger.

Pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with both sizes in stores on Friday, September 18. If the decision is still close, our iPhone 18 Pro price breakdown and the variable aperture explainer cover what the money buys on either size.
