Apple has published no guidance on putting a screen protector on either iPhone Duo display, and it sells none. What it has published is exactly what the folding inner panel is built from, and that is the part of the answer worth having before October 23.
The two displays are not the same material problem. The outer screen is Ceramic Shield 2, the same front glass as the iPhone 18 Pro. The inner screen is a laminate that Apple describes as a custom polymer over high-strength glass layers, with a coating and a nano-texture finish on top.

The inner display is not a sheet of glass
Apple’s own description matters here because it is unusually specific. The cover on the folding display is a custom polymer with 40 percent higher stiffness than the industry standard, sitting over high-strength glass layers, finished with a scratch-resistant coating Apple designed.

A polymer laminate is what makes a display fold, and it is also why Apple claims scratch resistance for the inner screen in different words from the outer one. For the outer display and the back, Apple names Ceramic Shield 2 and Ceramic Shield and attaches a three times figure. For the inner display it names a coating and attaches no figure at all.

The nano-texture finish is doing a job
Apple says the inner finish reduces glare and minimizes the visible crease. That is a functional coating, not a decoration, and it is the reason the screen-protector question is more interesting on this phone than on any other iPhone.
Apple has not said whether covering that finish with a film changes what it does, and it has published no cleaning or care instructions for the folding display. On the evidence available, anyone applying something to the inner screen is doing so without a published word from Apple in either direction.
What Apple sells instead
The published accessories protect the outside rather than the screen. The iPhone Duo Case is $79 in sand and navy blue, and the iPhone Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand is $129 in navy blue and taupe. Both were priced in Apple’s press release on September 9.
A folio does cover the inner display when the phone is closed, which is the nearest thing to a first-party answer, though Apple does not present it as screen protection. Against the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the Duo is the only one of the two with a surface Apple describes in polymer rather than glass.
What Apple has not said
- Whether a screen protector can be applied to the inner display, or whether one should be.
- Any hardness, Mohs or scratch rating for the inner display coating.
- How to clean the nano-texture finish, or what to avoid using on it.
- A fold-cycle rating for the hinge, or any crease measurement.
- Any repair price for either display, which remains unpublished alongside the rest of the Duo repair costs.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open on Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with the phone arriving on Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries and 28 more on October 30. Everything Apple has confirmed about the Duo is published now, so if screen protection matters to you, the five weeks before pre-orders are the time to ask Apple for an answer it has not yet given. The rest of the September lineup ships first, on September 18.
