Apple prices iPhone Duo at $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB on its US Store page. The three steps cost $200, $400 and $600, which works out at $0.78, $0.78 and $0.59 for each gigabyte added, by our arithmetic on Apple’s prices, taking 1TB as 1,024GB.

So the cheapest gigabytes on the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold sit in the top tier, and the tier that feels affordable charges the most per gigabyte. That is the same ladder Apple uses on iPhone 18 Pro, and it holds its shape in every country we have Duo prices for. Our iPhone Duo announcement roundup has the rest of the specification.

Key facts: iPhone Duo storage tiers and what each one costs

TierUS priceStep upPer gigabyte addedWhole phone per gigabyte
256GB$1,999n/an/a$7.81
512GB$2,199$200$0.78$4.29
1TB$2,599$400$0.78$2.54
2TB$3,199$600$0.59$1.56

Apple’s prices; the last three columns are our arithmetic on them, taking 1TB as 1,024GB and 2TB as 2,048GB. The right-hand column falls because the phone itself, not the flash, is most of what you are paying for at the bottom of the ladder.

The cheapest gigabytes are in the tier hardest to justify

Because each step doubles capacity while the price of the step rises by $200 at a time, the last step is the only one that breaks the rate. $600 buys 1,024GB, which is exactly three quarters of the $0.78 a gigabyte the first two steps charge.

That is a genuine discount and a bad reason to spend the money on its own. The question is whether you will fill it, and on this particular iPhone the answer is harder to reach than it is on the Pro.

Every country uses the same 1:2:3 ladder

Whatever the currency, the second step costs twice the first and the third costs three times the first. What changes between countries is how large that ladder is next to the phone underneath it.

Apple’s regional Store prices, our subtraction and our percentages. Tax treatment differs by country, so this compares the shape of the ladder rather than value for money: an Australian buyer pays the largest storage premium relative to the phone, an Indian buyer the smallest.

Where the money stops making sense

On iPhone 18 Pro the argument for the top tier is ProRes. Apple lists ProRes, Apple Log 2 and ProRes RAW on the Pro, and those are the formats that fill a terabyte. Apple’s published iPhone Duo camera list does not mention ProRes at all.

The heaviest thing on the Duo’s published list is 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps, along with Dual Capture at 4K30 and slow motion at 4K120, from a two-camera system with no telephoto beyond the 2x crop of the main lens. Our iPhone Duo camera breakdown goes through what that means for pictures; for storage it means the format most likely to justify $600 is not on the list.

What does push a Duo higher up the ladder is the screen. A 7.6-inch inner display that Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, running two apps side by side, tends to attract downloaded video, large games and more of everything kept offline. That is a real argument for 512GB or 1TB. It is a weaker one for 2TB, which costs $1,200 more than the base phone, or 60 percent on top of $1,999 by our arithmetic.

Which tier to take

  • 256GB, $1,999. A library that lives in the cloud, streaming rather than downloading, and no habit of recording long video.
  • 512GB, $2,199. The sensible middle for a phone this expensive, which most people will keep for years. The $200 is $5.56 a month across three years, by our arithmetic.
  • 1TB, $2,599. Offline video on the large display, big games, several years of photos kept on the device.
  • 2TB, $3,199. Hard to justify without the professional video formats Apple does not list for this phone.

What Apple has not said

Apple’s iPhone Duo tech specs do not list ProRes, and we cannot tell from Apple’s pages whether that is an absence or an omission, so treat it as unconfirmed rather than ruled out. Apple has also published no data rate or file size for any Duo recording mode, no figure for how much of each tier iOS 27 occupies, and no AppleCare or trade-in pricing for the model. Our iPhone Duo against iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison sets the two ladders side by side.
