Buy an iPhone Duo unlocked from Apple and the three-year cost is knowable today: $1,999 for 256GB, or 24 payments of $83.29 at 0 percent, and the phone is yours. Buy it on a carrier and the three-year cost is not knowable, because no US carrier has published an iPhone Duo offer of any kind.
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro footnotes do carry carrier credits of up to $1,200. Apple’s iPhone Duo release does not extend that figure to the fold, and the phone does not ship until October 23, so any Duo carrier number circulating now is a quote rather than an announced promotion.

The unlocked route, written out in full
Apple’s installment figure multiplied out is $1,998.96 over 24 months, four cents under the list price, which is what 0 percent looks like on paper. From month 25 the phone costs nothing, so the third year is free in a way the carrier route rarely is.

There is a requirement buyers miss. Apple states that to buy an iPhone with Apple Card Monthly Installments you must select AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at checkout, and prepaid plans are not supported. Paying cash or with another card carries no such condition.
Two Apple-side numbers move the total down. A trade-in credit of $175 to $885 for an iPhone 13 or later comes off at checkout, and Apple Card pays 3 percent Daily Cash on purchases at Apple, which is $59.97 on a $1,999 Duo by our arithmetic.
What “up to $1,200” means, when a carrier finally publishes one
A carrier credit is not a discount. It is a bill credit, spread over 24 or 36 months, tied to a qualifying plan and to your status as a new or existing customer, and the remainder stops if you leave.
Apple’s footnotes for iPhone 18 Pro list AT&T credits of $1,200, $930 or $350 depending on the trade-in device and the plan tier, applied over 36 months on 0 percent installments. The T-Mobile footnotes run from $150 to $1,200 over 24 to 36 months, with a separate route of up to $1,200 in credits for a qualifying port-in and no trade-in.
Verizon’s own iPhone 18 Pro page publishes only a pre-order time. No credit amount, no plan requirement, no trade-in terms. Boost appears as a checkout option on apple.com with no published credit either. None of these are Duo terms, and none of them appeared at the September 9 event.

eSIM only changes the lock question
iPhone Duo has no SIM tray anywhere in the world. It is dual eSIM with two active lines, and Apple says more than 500 carriers are supported, so moving an unlocked Duo to another network is a software step rather than a trip to a store.
Apple has not published locking terms for carrier-bought units of any new iPhone, and T-Mobile’s own pages could not be verified, so treat a carrier purchase as locked until the carrier says otherwise.
What has not been confirmed
No carrier has published an iPhone Duo credit, a plan requirement, a trade-in value or a lock policy. Verizon and Boost have published nothing for iPhone 18 Pro either, and T-Mobile’s terms could not be verified first-hand. Apple has not published an AppleCare+ price for iPhone Duo or the buyout figure at the end of an Apple Upgrade lease.
