iPhone 18 Pro costs $1,199, $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro did a year ago, and the 6.9-inch Pro Max is $1,299. Apple’s monthly option works out to $49.95 for 24 months on the Pro and $54.12 on the Pro Max.
A price increase invites the obvious question, and the answer depends on what you value more than on what you are upgrading from. Here is the case on each side, using only what Apple has confirmed.
The case for buying iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199
- The A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip, with a GPU up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro and a 32-core Neural Engine that doubles the AI processing of last year’s chip.
- The 48MP main camera gains a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4 with six laser-cut blades, plus manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app.
- The smaller Pro now reaches up to 36 hours of video playback, roughly matching last year’s Pro Max, and five minutes on a cable gives the Pro Max about seven hours of playback.
- A new vapor chamber attached directly to the chip delivers about three times the cooling performance of the prior design.
- Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread via the N1 chip, and a C2 modem that Apple says uses 15 percent less energy than the C1X.
- Storage now tops out at 2TB, and Black is back in the color list. The full list is in our announcement coverage.
The case against
- The design carries over from the iPhone 17 Pro. A new rear finish is the only visible change Apple describes.
- Apple did not announce changes to the Ultra Wide or front camera.
- The $100 increase applies to both models, and Apple has not published prices for 512GB, 1TB or 2TB, so the real cost of a well-specced unit is unknown.
- The iPhone Duo arrives in October at about $2,000, per the keynote, if a foldable is what you actually want.

Who the $1,199 makes sense for
If your current phone is an iPhone 15 Pro or older, the combined chip, camera and battery gains are large enough that the extra $100 is a small share of the purchase, and the 2-nanometer chip and the C2 modem are the kind of changes that age well.

If you own an iPhone 17 Pro, the year-over-year list is real but narrow, and the main draws are the variable aperture and the battery. The pre-event price estimates anticipated an increase, so the $1,199 figure is not a surprise so much as a confirmation.
Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on September 18. If you are undecided, the sensible move is to wait for Apple to post the higher-tier storage prices, which it has not yet done, before deciding which configuration is worth the money.
