Siri AI adds two writing jobs to Messages and Mail in iOS 27: in Apple’s words it “can now generate a draft from scratch or provide feedback on what you’ve written.” Apple also says it matches the tone and punctuation you normally use with a particular recipient, and that a systemwide automatic Proofread runs alongside it.
This is a change of scope rather than a new app. Apple presents both jobs as part of Write with Siri inside the apps you already use, and both arrive with the beta label Apple has attached to Siri AI on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27.

Apple has not published a breakdown of what the feedback covers, whether it is phrased as suggestions or as edits you accept, or whether the draft arrives in the message field or in a separate sheet.

What tone matching means in practice
Apple’s description is specific about the signal it uses: the tone and punctuation you use with that person, in Mail and in Messages. A note to a manager and a reply to a group chat should therefore come back different, without you setting a formality level.
It also implies the feature reads existing correspondence for context, which is consistent with the rest of Siri AI. Apple says the assistant draws on personal context, on-device, and that Apple Intelligence runs on-device and through Private Cloud Compute, where Apple says personal data is not stored or made accessible to Apple.
What you need, and where it does not work at launch
You need an Apple Intelligence iPhone. Apple’s iOS 27 page lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or later, which includes the new iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max and the iPhone Duo arriving in October. Every iPhone 11 and later gets iOS 27, but the writing features are not part of that.
Two regional gaps matter. Apple’s pages say Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, though Apple’s June release said Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU can use it in a supported language. Apple’s June release also said the new Apple Intelligence features are unavailable in China while it works through regulatory requirements.
Apple also notes that server-backed Apple Intelligence features, Siri AI included, are subject to daily usage limits, and that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. No figure or price has been published for either.
Why there is no step-by-step guide yet
Apple Support’s published step lists are still the iOS 26 versions, and there is no guide covering the Siri AI writing tools in Messages or Mail. Everything above comes from Apple’s iOS 27 and Siri pages rather than a support walkthrough.
We are not inventing a numbered procedure for a feature that ships in four days. Expect the entry points to appear in the Messages and Mail compose views once iOS 27 lands on September 14, and expect labels to differ from any iOS 26 instructions you find today.

- Whether feedback appears as inline suggestions, a summary, or edits you accept one by one.
- How you invoke a draft from scratch inside Messages and Mail.
- Whether third-party mail and messaging apps can use the same drafting.
- Whether the systemwide automatic Proofread can be turned off, or which apps it covers.
- The daily usage limit for writing requests, and the price of the future paid tier.
- When the beta label comes off Siri AI, or when the EU gets it on iPhone.
