watchOS 27 and Your iPhone: The Four Requirement Levels Apple Publishes, From iPhone 11 to iPhone 16

watchOS 27 needs an iPhone, and Apple publishes four separate iPhone requirements rather than one. The floor for the update itself is an iPhone 11, the floor for Siri AI on the wrist is an Apple Intelligence iPhone, and the floor for Live Rewind and Siri Recap is an iPhone 16 or newer.

That third rule is the strict one. It is tighter than Apple Intelligence’s own device list, which includes the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. An iPhone 15 Pro can run Siri AI on your watch but cannot run Live Rewind on it.

Level one: the update itself

Apple’s watchOS page states that watchOS 27 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, running iOS 27. Both updates ship on Monday, September 14, and the iPhone has to go first.

There is a wrinkle worth knowing. Apple’s September 9 press release named the iPhone SE (3rd generation), while Apple’s watchOS page and the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 tech specs say iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later. The tech-spec pages are the later and more specific source.

Level two: Siri AI on the wrist

Siri AI is a watchOS 27 feature, not a Series 12 feature, and Apple lists Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later and SE 3 as capable of Apple Intelligence when paired with an Apple Intelligence iPhone.

Apple’s Apple Intelligence device list for iPhone runs: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, the full iPhone 16 line including iPhone 16e, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and the new iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. An iPhone 14 Pro does not qualify, whatever watch it is paired with.

Level three: iPhone 16 or newer for Live Rewind

Apple’s support document on Audio Intelligence sets two different bars inside the same feature group. Sound Recognition and Music Recognition with Shazam need an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later. Live Rewind and Siri Recap need an iPhone 16 or newer.

Both bars sit on top of a watch requirement of Series 12 or Ultra 4, so Live Rewind takes a new watch and a recent iPhone together. Apple’s wording is iPhone 16 or newer rather than a list of model names, and Apple has not enumerated which models it counts.

Level four: where you live, what language, how old you are

Apple states that Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, and that features which rely on Siri AI are covered by the same exclusion. Apple adds that it is working hard to find a path forward that preserves its users’ privacy and security.

Siri AI is in beta and available in English to start, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish coming in October. Audio Intelligence starts in English, and Apple says additional languages are planned for future releases without naming them. Siri AI is not available to users under 13.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published a release time for Monday, has not named the iPhone models it means by iPhone 16 or newer, and has not given a date for Live Rewind and Siri Recap beyond beta later in 2026. It has not put a date on the EU situation either.

watchOS 27 and iOS 27 both arrive Monday, September 14. If Live Rewind is the feature you want, the watch side of it goes on sale Friday, September 18, and our event recap covered what else launched that day.
