Apple has published nothing that says an iPhone runs slower after a major update, and there is no iOS 27 known-issues document to check against. The one published measurement that speaks directly to older hardware was taken on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, the oldest generation iOS 27 supports, and it points the other way: app launches up to 30 percent faster.
That single detail is worth more than the number itself. Apple could have demonstrated its speed claim on this year’s phone and chose a 2019 model instead. iOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14 for iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), and it drops no iPhone that ran iOS 26.

The one claim Apple measured on an old iPhone
Apple’s performance footnote names the test device, the build it was compared against and the months the testing ran. The app launch figure came from an iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 26.4.2, compared with a prerelease copy of iOS 27, during April and May 2026.

Read plainly, that is Apple choosing a seven-year-old phone as the example for the claim people most want reassurance about. It is not a promise about your particular iPhone, and it covers one action, app launching, rather than the whole system.
What the number does not cover
- “Up to” is a ceiling, not an average. Apple publishes no typical figure and no range.
- The software tested was prerelease and months old by the time the release candidate was issued on September 9.
- One metric is not general responsiveness. Nothing is published about scrolling, camera launch, keyboard latency or app switching on older hardware.
- The comparison build is iOS 26.4.2, not the iOS 26.6.2 most people are running today.
The first days after an update, and the only mechanism on the record
Two Apple notes explain why a phone can feel busy immediately after updating, without either of them being written about speed. The iOS 26.6 release notes say that update “optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27”, and Apple’s iOS 27 material says Spotlight, Photos and Mail search have been rebuilt.
Indexing is work the phone does after the update lands, and Apple has never published how long it takes or what it costs in the meantime. That is the honest limit of what can be said: a mechanism exists in Apple’s own words, and no duration attached to it does.
The heaviest new features never load on an older iPhone
iOS 27 runs on roughly 33 iPhone models. Apple Intelligence runs on about a third of them, and that split matters here, because Siri AI, Image Playground and the server-backed photo editing tools are the most demanding things in the release. On an iPhone 11 through iPhone 15 Plus, none of them installs at all.

The new A20 Pro chip and its Neural Engine are the hardware those features were built for, and they are exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. An older iPhone gets the redesign, the search rebuild and the app launch work without the AI load.
What Apple has not said
- Whether any iPhone is expected to be slower on iOS 27 than on iOS 26, in general or by model.
- How long post-update indexing runs, or how to tell when it has finished.
- Any figure for scrolling, camera or keyboard responsiveness on an older iPhone.
- Download size or free space required, which is the other common cause of a phone feeling sluggish during an install.
- Any known-issues or security document for iOS 27. Apple’s security index still stops at iOS 26.6.2, dated September 8, 2026.
iOS 27 lands on Monday, September 14 with no time attached. If your iPhone is one of the older supported models, the only published expectation is faster app launches and rebuilt search, and the only sensible test is your own phone a few days after the index settles. Everything else Apple announced this month reaches stores on Friday, September 18.
