The 40-core M5 Max at $4,499 is the one to buy if you run AI models on your laptop
The 32-core M5 Max comes with 36GB of memory, and Apple won’t let you change it. The 40-core version starts at 48GB and runs at 614GB/s of memory bandwidth, against 460GB/s on the 32-core chip, according to Apple’s specs. Apple says M5 Max processes LLM prompts up to 4x faster than M4 Max, and that extra memory is what lets you load bigger models.
If you edit 8K video, train small models or render complex 3D scenes, pay the extra $700 for the 40-core version. If your work stops at 4K editing and big photo libraries, the $3,799 model is the better value.
The touchscreen 16-inch M5 Max MacBook Pro costs $1,000 more than this deal
Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and M5 Max starts at $4,799 and ships November 6. It’s 0.7 pounds lighter, at 4 pounds, and adds an OLED touchscreen and a Dynamic Island. The chip options are the same. So unless you want touch or the brighter OLED panel, the $3,799 model gets you the same performance for $1,000 less.
What the 16-inch M5 Max MacBook Pro gives you, from battery to ports
- 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with 1600 nits peak HDR brightness

Order now to lock in the price, even if the laptop ships in late November
Ordering today gets you the $3,799 price even if delivery slips into December, and Amazon doesn’t charge your card until the laptop ships. AppleCare+ costs $415 at checkout. Returns are free for 15 days after delivery.
Check that the listing shows the GPU core count and memory you want, since Amazon puts every 16-inch configuration on one page. You’ll find the 14-inch version in our MacBook Pro deals roundup.
