Google is rolling out some very helpful updates for Mac users who rely on Gemini. The desktop app now supports advanced voice control and a smart dictation tool that cleans up your speech as you talk. This means the software will ignore your pauses or stutters and drop polished text right where your cursor is resting. It makes talking to your computer feel much more natural and useful for getting things done quickly.
The software turns your messy speech into clear sentences
After showing off the feature earlier this year, Google is now bringing its intelligent dictation to the desktop. This tool works a lot like the Gboard Rambler feature found on newer phones. When you speak into any window, the app automatically filters out filler words like umm and ah. It also understands when you correct yourself mid-sentence.

Instead of typing out every mistake, it captures the main idea of what you are saying and inserts the polished text right at your cursor. To use this new tool, you just need to long-press the Fn key on your keyboard. You can also tap the screen sharing button inside the Ask Gemini box. This brings up a floating pill with a waveform at the bottom of your screen to show that it is listening.
The app looks at your screen to complete complex tasks
Beyond simply writing down your words, the updated software can also understand the context of what is currently on your screen. You have to turn on the reasoning setting to use this part of the app. Once active, you can highlight local files or documents while using macOS and ask the assistant to summarize the information for an email.
You can also use this feature to edit text and images. If you highlight a paragraph, you can use your voice to rewrite the words or change the tone. The app will then drop the new version right over the old text. For images, you can select a graphic on your desktop and ask the program to generate a dark mode version of that specific picture.
Make sure you are running version 1.88 of the app to try these features. The voice tools are currently rolling out to users globally in English, though the company plans to add more languages soon. As Apple continues to build out its own intelligence tools, this update gives desktop users a powerful alternative for hands-free computing.
