The social media platform X has officially released its new standalone messaging application named XChat, available exclusively for iPhone and iPad users. It designed the application to provide a dedicated, private space for conversations, separating communication functions from its primary social media timeline.
The newly launched application requires devices running iOS 26 or later and can be directly downloaded from the App Store across the United States.
The application provides encrypted private messaging options and custom visual settings
Elon Musk’s XChat supports direct messaging, group chats, file sharing, and audio or video calls. X states that it protects all conversations using end-to-end encryption and a device-specific PIN. The application includes features such as disappearing messages, screenshot alerts, and tools that allow users to edit or delete sent texts for all participants. It promises a secure environment free from advertising and tracking mechanisms.
The interface adopts iOS 26 design standards, giving users control over visual preferences. It offers light and dark modes, adjustable left-swipe interaction behaviors, and multiple choices for the application icon.
This standalone application separates direct communication from public social feeds
X developed the application to provide users with a dedicated space for private conversations, away from the busy public timeline. It includes a dedicated button that lets users quickly switch back to the main X application. This launch marks a shift in its strategy, choosing to unbundle specific features rather than packing everything into a single software package.
The messaging application underwent beta testing earlier this year to shape its initial release. While it is currently rolling out across the United States, its developers have not yet announced an official timeline for an Android version.
