iPhone 13: How Much Smaller is the Notch?

Lots of people were on notch-watch as the iPhone 13 was unveiled on Tuesday. MacWorld has the details on how much smaller it is compared to that on previous models.

The notch has been reduced by 20 percent in width…The iPhone 13’s notch is indeed narrower than the iPhone 12 thanks to the placement of the speaker, which has moved to the top of the phone. However, the notch is still very present and very noticeable and actually looks a bit taller than the iPhone 12’s notch. It likely won’t make too much of a difference compared to the iPhone 12 when viewing full-screen photos and videos.

· Andrew Orr · Cool Stuff Found

The iScanner document scanning app received an update recently that lets it make use of the iPhone 12 LiDAR sensor. After that the user can easily convert the resulting calculations in PDF or JPG format. Also with the main functionality of the iScanner app it’s possible to add it in any other document or plan and edit it with OCR tool. For example, interior designers can measure the space of an apartment, windows, doorways or furniture and change or add it in two taps to the existing PDF design-project. The team released a short video on YouTube showing the LiDAR scanning.

This Hardware Hack Gives iPhone Dual-SIM Support

· Jeff Butts · Cool Stuff Found

In China, owners of the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, and iPhone 12 models enjoy dual-SIM support. This means they can insert two nano-SIMs, even from different carriers, into their phones. This feature is only available in China, and Apple doesn’t provide the configurations anywhere else. In the iPhone 12, of course, you have the possibility of using your physical SIM card along with a second, digital eSIM. YouTuber Hugh Jeffreys , however, had the idea to try swapping the SIM reader and tray in a non-Chinese iPhone for one from China. Surprisingly, the hardware hack works and provides dual-SIM support for non-Chinese iPhones. It’s definitely an advanced-level task, since it requires removing the display from your device. Still, if you want to have support for two physical SIM cards in your iPhone, it definitely seems within reach.

Current iPhone shipments in China are 12 percent down on the iPhone X series, according to a research note from Goldman Sachs seen by AppleInsider. It casts some doubt on the idea that we are in the midst of a so-called ‘super-cycle’.

Analyst Rod Hall analyzes the latest China smartphone shipment data for the month of May, which was recently released by the state-run China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). Total handset units during the period clocked in at 23 million units, down 32% year-over-year. Hall points out that this appears to be the lowest shipment numbers for China since at least May 2014. Hall also says that re-opening “seems to have pulled demand forward quite a bit out of April and May,” but that the impact appears to have been short-lived. He suggests that China’s re-opening story could be a blueprint for how other countries fare when they re-open.
