Apple has used five charging methods across AirPods cases: Lightning, USB-C, MagSafe, Qi and Apple Watch chargers. The $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case accepts three of them, USB-C, Qi and an Apple Watch charger, while the $129 AirPods 5 case accepts USB-C only.
The pattern matters if you are upgrading, because the charger on your nightstand may not fit the case you are about to buy. Lightning has left the current lineup entirely, and MagSafe has never appeared on a standard AirPods case. Every entry below comes from Apple’s tech specs pages and Apple’s compare page.

Two things stand out. Apple split the standard line into a wired case and a wireless case in 2019 and has kept that split ever since, and the wireless half of the pair has swapped MagSafe for an Apple Watch charger along the way.

AirPods Pro 3 at $249 has the most flexible case in the current lineup, since USB-C, MagSafe, Qi and an Apple Watch charger all work with it. That case also carries a speaker and a lanyard loop, and Apple lists a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip inside it.
MagSafe is the method the standard AirPods never kept
The AirPods 3 case from 2021 was the one standard case with MagSafe, and Apple then sold a cheaper Lightning-only version of it in 2022. When the line moved to USB-C with AirPods 4 in 2024, MagSafe did not come with it, and Apple’s specifications for the two AirPods 5 cases do not mention it either.
So an AirPods 3 owner with a MagSafe puck loses that alignment on any current standard model. The workaround Apple offers on the $149 case is a Qi pad or the charger from your Apple Watch, which is the same trick it introduced with AirPods 4 with ANC. What the extra $20 on AirPods 5 buys
- Qi charging and support for Apple Watch chargers, neither of which the $129 case has.
- A speaker in the case, so Find My can play a sound. Both models get separation alerts.
- A force sensor with volume swipe, which Apple lists only for the Wireless Charging Case model.
- An extra hour of listening per charge, 5 hours with noise cancellation on instead of 4, and 22 hours in total instead of 20.
- A slightly heavier case, 34.7 g against 32.3 g, in the same 46.2 by 50.1 by 21.2 mm shell.

What Apple has not said
- How fast any AirPods case charges. Apple publishes no wattage and no time-to-full figure.
- Whether the AirPods 5 case supports Qi2 rather than plain Qi certification.
- Whether a USB-C cable is in the box. Apple’s in-box list for AirPods 5 names the earbuds, the case and documentation only.
- A water or dust rating for the AirPods Max Smart Case, which is absent from both Max spec pages.
- Any trade-in credit for an older case or set of AirPods. Apple’s trade-in page shows no per-model figure.
If your charging habit is a Qi pad or an Apple Watch puck, the $149 AirPods 5 is the model to order; if you charge from a cable, the $129 version does the same job.
