If the budget is fixed and the category is not, the best value in Apple’s lineup right now is the Mac mini with M6 at $899, or $799 education, because it is the one product where Apple put its newest-generation chip in the cheapest machine of its family. Below $200 the pick is AirPods 5 with the Wireless Charging Case at $149, which is the only step in the whole lineup where $20 buys a published battery gain.
Every recommendation here rests on a price Apple has published, and every one carries a catch. The Mac mini has no display, keyboard or mouse in the box and does not reach general sale until Tuesday, September 22. The cheap AirPods are cheap for a reason. And the $700 to $900 band, where most people actually shop, got more expensive rather than less on September 9.

Why the overall winner is a desktop
Apple is currently selling M6, M5 Pro, M5 Max and M5 Ultra at the same time, and the newest of those four chips is in the cheapest machine. Apple describes the M6 as up to 40 percent faster on CPU than the chip it replaces, with up to 2x faster graphics, up to 4x faster AI performance and up to 2x faster storage than M4, plus 16GB of unified memory as standard, a 32GB option, up to 170GB/s of bandwidth, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Those are Apple’s own generational comparisons published without test conditions, so read them as direction rather than as benchmark scores.

The price is what makes it the value pick. At $899 it undercuts every iPhone above the iPhone 16, and it undercuts the 11-inch iPad Air by only $150 while carrying a desktop chip. The honest qualification is the one nobody puts on a spec sheet: a mini plus Apple’s own Studio Display at $1,599 costs more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max, so this only works if the screen is already on your desk.
Under $200, and under $450
AirPods 5 come in two versions and the gap between them is published. The $129 model is rated at four hours with noise cancelling and 20 hours with the case. The $149 model with the Wireless Charging Case is rated at five hours and 22 hours, and the case charges wirelessly. On the wrist, Apple publishes starting prices and very little else. Apple Watch SE 3 starts at $249, Series 12 at $399 and Ultra 4 at $799. What Apple has not published is any per-configuration price, so the moment you want cellular, titanium, ceramic or the larger case, the figure you are quoted is not one Apple has printed. Budget for more than the starting price, or buy the entry configuration deliberately.

Four of the iPhones Apple kept now cost $100 more than they were listed at on September 8, and Apple did not announce that increase. It also stopped selling iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The old advice to buy last year’s model the week the new one lands does not survive this lineup, and trade-in values for iPhone fell on the same day, so waiting cost money twice. The catch in each option
- AirPods 5 at $129. An hour less noise cancelling and two hours less with the case than the $149 version, and no wireless charging on the case.
- Apple Watch at any price. Apple publishes starting prices only, so cellular, titanium and ceramic configurations have no published figure.
- iPad Air at $749. One recorded price, and no published unified memory, which leaves the advanced Apple Intelligence tier unconfirmed.
- Mac mini at $899. A 32GB memory ceiling, Thunderbolt 4 rather than 5, and nothing to look at until you supply a display.
- Any older iPhone. Four of them went up $100 on September 9 and the two iPhone 17 Pro models are gone.
- Any Mac. macOS 27 is the last release to support Rosetta, so Intel-only software has one cycle left.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published per-configuration Apple Watch prices, per-model iPad prices beyond the one recorded figure here, per-device AppleCare+ prices for anything launched in September 2026, or test conditions for any M6 or M5 performance claim. It has not published a specific late-October date for the 512GB Mac Studio. Trade-in figures for individual models are values recorded rather than a table Apple prints, and the only wording Apple stands behind is a range of $175 to $885 in United States credit for an iPhone 13 or later.
The next three dates decide most of this. iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate arrive free on Monday, September 14. AirPods 5 and Apple Watch reach stores on Friday, September 18. Mac mini and Mac Studio follow on Tuesday, September 22, and the Back to School gift card on eligible Macs and iPads closes on Thursday, September 24.
