Apple Reference Image, a new feature announced with the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, stores an untouched original of a photo with verification metadata so the image can be shown to come from a real capture rather than from AI.
It arrives as Apple also ships Image Playground with photorealistic images in iOS 27, which makes a way to tell a real photo from a generated one more relevant than it was a year ago. Apple lists the feature under both the iPhone 18 Pro camera announcement and iOS 27.
How Apple Reference Image works
According to Apple’s press release, the feature keeps an untouched original alongside any edits, with verification metadata attached to that original. The edited version is still there; the difference is that the source capture is preserved with it.

Apple has not published technical details such as the metadata format, whether it follows an industry standard, or how a third party would check an image’s verification data.

The iPhone 18 Pro camera behind it
Apple Reference Image sits on top of a reworked main camera. The 48MP Fusion camera on both the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max has a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4, built from six laser-cut blades.

Apple did not announce changes to the Ultra Wide or front cameras. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, framed the update around “camera, performance, battery, and intelligence” in Apple’s announcement.
Which iPhones get Apple Reference Image?
Apple lists Apple Reference Image among the iOS 27 features as well as the iPhone 18 Pro features, but it has not said whether older iPhones get it with the software update. iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14 as a free update.
The iPhone 18 Pro goes on pre-order Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT and ships Friday, September 18. Apple has not said whether the verification data survives sharing to other apps or services, and we will follow up when the phones and more details from the event are in hand.
