Apple Trade In Step Order: What to Do on September 12, on September 18 and Inside the 14 Days After

The part of trading in an iPhone that goes wrong is not the paperwork, it is the order. Apple’s estimate is valid for 14 days after you receive the new device, which means the work is spread across three dates rather than crammed into one.

Those dates are Saturday, September 12, when pre-orders open and the trade-in is added at checkout, Friday, September 18, when the new phone arrives, and the fortnight that starts the moment you unbox it. Backing up protects your data. Turning off Find My and signing out is what makes the old device processable. Neither belongs before delivery day.

Pre-order day: answer, do not prepare

On September 12 the only trade-in task is the questionnaire. Apple asks about the device and its condition, applies the estimated credit against the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro or whichever model you choose, and you carry on using the old phone exactly as before.

Nothing is signed out and nothing is erased at this stage. Your current iPhone has to keep working for another six days at minimum, and longer if delivery slips.

Delivery day: transfer first, release second

When the new phone lands, the sequence runs in one direction. Set up the new iPhone and move your data across. Take a backup of the old device once the transfer is done, so there is a copy that does not depend on the handset you are about to give away.

Only then turn off Find My and sign out of the Apple Account on the old iPhone. That order matters because signing out early leaves you carrying a phone you can no longer locate, and because a device still tied to an account is the one thing that stops a trade-in being processed at all. Apple’s confirmation email carries its own preparation instructions, and those are the ones to follow rather than a checklist you remember from a previous upgrade.

The 14-day clock, and what it is measured from

Apple’s wording is that the trade-in estimate “is valid for 14 days after you receive your new device”. The clock is tied to delivery, not to the day you ordered, so a September 18 arrival gives you until the start of October in practice.

That is generous enough to be dangerous. Two weeks is long enough to put the old phone in a drawer and forget it, and the estimate does not survive that. If the credit was applied at checkout, the trade-in is part of the transaction rather than an afterthought.

Data and credit are two different jobs

  • Backing up protects your data. It does nothing for your credit.
  • Turning off Find My and signing out protects your credit. Do it only after the transfer is complete.
  • Describing the condition accurately protects both, because Apple verifies the device either way and an inaccurate answer is corrected rather than honoured.
  • Keeping the old phone usable until the new one is set up protects your week, particularly with iOS 27 arriving on September 14 and a migration to run on top of it.

What has not been confirmed

Apple has not published the text of its condition questions, a grading scale, a per-model value table, or a deduction schedule for damage. It has not said whether values will move again at launch, having changed them on September 9 without an announcement. Carrier trade-in preparation terms are not published by AT&T or Verizon either.

Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with delivery from Friday, September 18. Add the trade-in at checkout, leave the old phone alone until the new one is in your hand, and see our iPhone 18 Pro launch details and the event recap for what else lands that week.
