Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 add Audio Intelligence, and two parts of it matter if you are deaf or hard of hearing: Sound Recognition alerts for sirens, alarms, doorbells and baby cries, and Live Rewind, which shows the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as text when you double-press the Digital Crown. Sound Recognition requires Series 12 or Ultra 4.
A hardware gate is the fact that decides whether any of this is worth reading about, so it goes first. The watches reach stores on Friday, September 18, from $399 for Series 12 and $799 for Ultra 4. What follows is the published requirement set, including the parts that are a beta and the region where they will not turn on.

Sound Recognition is gated to the new watches
Apple states that Sound Recognition alerts require Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4. It is not a watchOS 27 feature that older models pick up on September 14, which is the single most important line in the announcement for anyone who has been waiting for a wrist alert when a smoke alarm goes off.

Apple has named four sounds: sirens, alarms, doorbells and baby cries. It has not published a fuller list, an accuracy figure, or how an alert is delivered on the wrist. Apple describes these as alerts. They are not hearing devices, Apple has not claimed they are, and they are not a substitute for one or for the alerting equipment people fit in a home.
Live Rewind and Siri Recap are a beta, later
Live Rewind is the feature that turns a moment you missed into text: a double-press of the Digital Crown displays the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet. Siri Recap goes further and produces high-level summaries of a conversation.
Both are beta features Apple has dated to late 2026, not September 18, and both need an Apple Intelligence iPhone paired to the watch, which means iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 or later. They are also subject to the daily usage limits Apple applies to features that lean on server-side models.
What the Secure Exclave means for a microphone on your wrist
Apple’s wording is that Audio Intelligence uses the built-in microphone and the secure S11 chip alongside Apple Intelligence, and that the S11 contains a Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment for on-device audio processing with immediate deletion. Apple says no audio recordings are stored.
For a feature that only works by listening continuously, that is the design detail worth understanding before you turn it on, and it is also the detail to raise with the people you talk to. Apple has not published how Live Rewind behaves in a jurisdiction with two-party consent rules, or whether there is any indicator to the person speaking.
One-handed control in watchOS 27
watchOS 27 adds a single-handed tap gesture for the Smart Stack and a dynamic app grid with Siri-suggested apps, both of which reduce how much precise tapping a watch needs. Workout Buddy also now works without a nearby iPhone, over Wi-Fi or cellular, and adds Spanish.
watchOS 27 is free on Monday, September 14, for Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, and requires an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (3rd generation), running iOS 27.

What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a full list of recognized sounds, an accuracy claim for Sound Recognition, the form the alert takes, a firm date inside late 2026 for the Live Rewind and Siri Recap betas, or any hearing-health feature for Apple Watch. It has also not said whether Sound Recognition works when the paired iPhone is out of range, or whether Series 12’s microphone hardware differs from the previous generation.
