Apple publishes three ways to pay for a 256GB iPhone 18 Pro: $1,199 up front, $49.95 a month for 24 months with Apple Card Monthly Installments, or an Apple Upgrade lease from $34.99 a month over 24 months. The lease is $14.96 a month cheaper than the installment plan, and the reason is simple: a lease does not add up to the purchase price.
Apple lists the installment figure in its newsroom release and the lease figures on the iPhone 18 Pro product page, which also offers a 12-month lease at $49.99 a month. The installment plan is the easy one to read. Twenty-four payments of $49.95 come to $1,198.80, twenty cents under the cash price, so the monthly figure is the sticker price divided by the term and nothing more.
Why the lease costs less each month
A 24-month lease at $34.99 collects $839.76, which is $359.24 less than the phone costs. The 12-month lease at $49.99 collects $599.88, almost exactly half the purchase price. In both cases you are paying for part of the phone, not all of it, which is why the monthly number is lower than the installment figure.
What Apple does not publish on the pages carrying those prices is what happens when the term ends: whether you return the phone, buy it out, or trade up to an iPhone 19 Pro, and whether AppleCare+ is bundled into the lease price. Until Apple states those terms, the $34.99 figure is a monthly cost rather than a total cost of ownership, and it should not be compared with $49.95 as though the two buy the same thing.
Trade-in changes the maths on all three
Apple’s newsroom release puts Apple Trade In credit at $175 to $885 for an iPhone 13 or later. Applied to the cash price, the top of that range takes a 256GB iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199 to $314 by our arithmetic. Apple’s Store page separately advertises up to $1,200 in carrier credit from AT&T and T-Mobile, paid as bill credits over 36 months rather than as money off at checkout. The same three-way choice on Pro Max, iPhone Duo and Apple Watch
Every product Apple announced on September 9 that carries a monthly figure follows the same pattern, and none of the leases publish an end-of-term arrangement:
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: $1,299 outright, or $54.12 a month for 24 months, which totals $1,298.88 by our arithmetic. Our Pro against Pro Max comparison covers whether the larger phone earns the extra $100.
- iPhone Duo: $1,999 outright, $83.29 a month for 24 months, or an Apple Upgrade lease from $57.99 a month.
- Apple Watch Series 12: $399 outright, or an Apple Upgrade lease at $11.99 a month over 24 months and $21.99 over 12 months.
- Apple Watch Ultra 4: $799 outright, or an Apple Upgrade lease from $24.99 a month over 24 months.
- Outside the US, no regional Apple Store page we checked lists a lease at all. The UK page shows 30 months at 0 percent APR instead, at 39.96 pounds a month for the 256GB Pro.
What Apple has not said
- What happens at the end of an Apple Upgrade lease: return, buy-out price or upgrade eligibility.
- Whether AppleCare+ is included in the lease price, and at what level of cover.
- What “from $34.99” becomes at 512GB, 1TB or 2TB; Apple quotes the lease only for the 256GB model.
- Whether the Apple Upgrade lease is offered in any country other than the US.
- The credit approval terms for either Apple Card Monthly Installments or the lease.
- Per-model trade-in values; Apple publishes only the $175 to $885 range.
