iPhone 18 Pro reaches buyers on Friday, September 18, and the useful preparation happens on the phone you already own rather than the one in transit. Apple publishes exactly one detail about the new device’s software state, and it is a helpful one: the box contains “iPhone with iOS 27”, so there is no first-run update to sit through.
Everything else Apple has published for the days before delivery concerns your current iPhone, your carrier and your charger. Here is what is documented for the phone that goes on sale that Friday, and what is not.

Your current iPhone can be on iOS 27 first
iOS 27 arrives on Monday, September 14, four days before the new hardware, and it is free. Apple’s published compatibility list runs back to iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2nd generation, which covers almost every phone likely to be traded in this month.

Apple has not published a release time for Monday, a download size or a free-space requirement, and its general “Update your iPhone or iPad” support article still carries a last-updated date of December 5, 2025 and does not mention iOS 27 at all. Treat Monday as a date, not an hour.
What to have ready to charge it
Apple’s tech specs list a 1 m USB-C Charge Cable as the only accessory in the box. The charging figures Apple quotes all assume hardware sold separately, so the fast-charge claim is only true if you already own the right adapter.

Check your carrier before the box lands
Apple’s specs page lists “Dual eSIM (two active eSIMs)” for iPhone 18 Pro and states that the models do not support a physical SIM, and Apple’s press release names 12 markets where the phone ships with no SIM tray at all: Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the United States and the US Virgin Islands.
Apple’s footnote on this is short and it points away from Apple: “Use of an eSIM requires a carrier that supports eSIM and a wireless service plan. See carrier for details.” That is a question to settle with your carrier before Friday, not on Friday.
The free session Apple does publish
Apple lists free Personal Setup, described as one-on-one online sessions with an Apple Specialist covering setup and data transfer. Apple’s store also advertises three months of Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple News+ and Apple Fitness+ free with a device purchase, which is worth claiming in the first week rather than the second.

- Any download size or free-space requirement for iOS 27.

- Any support document covering the September 2026 products, including Series 12, Ultra 4 and AirPods 5.
- Any published requirement to have an Apple Account signed in or a card saved before delivery.
