iPhone 18 Pro vs Pro Max: Apple’s Spec Sheet Differs on Four Lines and Matches on the Rest

Apple’s own specification sheet separates the iPhone 18 Pro from the iPhone 18 Pro Max on four lines: screen size, physical size and weight, battery ratings and price. On every other published row, from the A20 Pro chip to the camera system to the charging speed, the two phones read the same.

That makes the decision unusually clean for a launch that starts pre-orders on Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT. There is no hidden feature on the larger model this year, so the question is whether a bigger screen, 38 more grams, longer rated battery life and $100 are worth trading against each other.

Everything Apple lists as identical

The list of shared rows is longer than the list of differences, and it includes every part of the phone that people usually pay a premium for on the larger model.

  • A20 Pro chip: 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, dual 16-core Neural Engine, the same on both
  • 48MP Fusion main camera at 24 mm with the four-stop variable aperture, f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0
  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13 mm and 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 100 mm, with the same 8x optical-quality reach
  • 18MP Center Stage front camera at f/1.9
  • 4K Dolby Vision to 120 fps, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock
  • 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes with a 60W adapter, MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 25W
  • Aluminum unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 front, Ceramic Shield back, IP68 to 6 meters for 30 minutes
  • Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, second-generation Ultra Wideband, USB-C with USB 3 at up to 10 Gb/s
  • 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, in black, silver, glacier and burgundy
  • In the box: the iPhone with iOS 27 and a 1 m USB-C cable

Even the thickness matches at 8.75 mm. The only physical numbers that move are the two that describe footprint and mass.

What the battery gap is actually rated at

Apple’s figures are ratings, not measurements of your day. The gap is six hours of typical use, nine hours of video playback and seven hours of streamed video. As a proportion, the Pro Max is rated about 25 percent longer on typical use.

It is worth reading those ratings alongside the 45-hour video playback claim on the Pro Max, because the headline number is a video-playback figure rather than a usage figure. Apple has published no screen-on-time or charge-cycle comparison between the two.

The $100 gap, tier by tier

CapacityiPhone 18 ProiPhone 18 Pro MaxGap
256GB$1,199$1,299$100
512GB$1,399$1,499$100
1TB$1,799$1,899$100
2TB$2,399$2,499$100

The gap never widens. That is worth knowing because it means the size decision and the storage decision are independent: $100 buys the larger body at any capacity, and $200 buys the next capacity up on either body.

Which way the four differences point

If you carry the phone in a shirt pocket, shoot handheld for long stretches or already find a 6.3-inch phone at the limit of one-handed use, the 211 g model is the one the numbers favour. If you read, watch or navigate on the phone for hours and charge once a day at most, the six extra rated hours are the strongest argument on the sheet.

What should not enter the decision is capability. Unlike some previous generations, there is no camera, chip or connectivity advantage waiting on the larger model, which is also why the comparison against the iPhone 17 Pro turns on the same shared hardware for both sizes. Our earlier side-by-side of the Pro and Pro Max covers the same ground from the buying angle.

What has not been confirmed

Apple has not published battery capacities in milliampere-hours for either model, has not published a charge-cycle rating, and has not published any performance difference between the two. It has also not published per-configuration weights for different colours or capacities. The proportional comparisons above are our arithmetic on Apple’s published ratings.

Pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT and both models reach stores on Friday, September 18. Twenty further countries follow on Friday, September 25, per Apple’s announcement at the September 9 event.
