Yes, iPhone Duo has a Dynamic Island. Apple’s tech specs list it among the foldable’s display features, and Apple’s press release says the phone ships with a redesigned Dynamic Island as part of iOS 27.1, although Apple has not described what the redesign looks like.

The detail is easy to miss because most attention has gone to the 7.6-inch folding display and the decision to drop Face ID for Touch ID in the side button. Here is exactly what Apple has confirmed, where the cameras that shape the cutout sit, and how the Duo’s island differs from the smaller Dynamic Island on iPhone 18 Pro.

Where the Dynamic Island appears on iPhone Duo

Apple’s tech specs put Dynamic Island in the feature row that both displays share, next to True Tone, P3 wide color, HDR, Haptic Touch, Apple Pencil (USB-C) support and an anti-reflective coating. The spec sheet does not say whether the island appears on the outer display, the inner display or both.

The camera layout is the clearest guide. The outer 5.4-inch display carries a conventional 12MP Center Stage camera with Retina Flash, which is the kind of front camera a Dynamic Island wraps around on other iPhones. The inner 7.6-inch display instead uses the under-display FaceTime camera at f/1.8, which Apple lists at 1080p rather than 4K. Apple has not said whether any cutout or island is drawn around that under-display camera when the phone is open.

Both panels are Super Retina XDR OLEDs with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On, 1000 nits typical, 1600 nits peak HDR and 3000 nits peak outdoors, and they share one aspect ratio. See iPhone Duo’s two displays for the full panel breakdown.

What Apple’s redesign changes, and what it has not explained

Apple’s press release lists four software changes that arrive with iOS 27.1 on iPhone Duo: Split View, an upgraded StandBy, a redesigned Dynamic Island and a Call Context widget. That single phrase is the entire published description of the redesign.

For comparison, Apple was specific about the iPhone 18 Pro. Its Dynamic Island is smaller than last year’s, shows up to three Live Activities at once, and still houses Face ID. Apple has not said whether the Duo’s island shows three Live Activities, whether the redesign refers to its shape or to how it behaves across the phone’s positions, or whether it adapts when the phone moves between the outer and inner displays.

What Apple has said is that iOS on iPhone Duo responds to how the phone is posed, with StandBy, landscape, portrait, seated and standing positions. It would be natural for a redesigned island to play a part in that, but Apple has not connected the two in any published material.

The biggest structural difference is Face ID. On iPhone 18 Pro, Apple shrank the island while keeping the Face ID hardware inside it. iPhone Duo has no Face ID at all, so its cutout does not need to house the same sensors. Apple has not published what components sit inside the Duo’s island beyond the 12MP camera and Retina Flash on the outer display.

The rest of the iOS 27.1 changes around it

The redesigned island is one of several Duo-specific software pieces. Split View runs two apps side by side on the inner display, StandBy has been upgraded, and the new Call Context widget surfaces information during calls. Our guide to Split View, StandBy and the posable positions covers those in more detail.

Two other pieces of context matter. iPhone Duo is the only new iPhone that ships with a point release, iOS 27.1, rather than iOS 27, which launches on September 14. And Apple lists Apple Pencil (USB-C) support for both displays, arriving later in 2026.

What Apple has not said

  • Which display, or displays, shows the Dynamic Island.
  • What the redesign changes visually or functionally compared with iPhone 18 Pro.
  • Whether the Duo’s island shows up to three Live Activities like iPhone 18 Pro.
  • Whether the island changes when the phone is opened, closed or posed in StandBy.
  • What hardware sits inside the island other than the 12MP camera and Retina Flash.
