iPhone Duo GPS and Sensors: Dual-Frequency GPS With NavIC, Barometer, and Four Ambient Light Sensors

iPhone Duo uses dual-frequency GPS that works with six satellite systems, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, BeiDou and NavIC, according to Apple’s tech specs. The same sheet lists a barometer, a high dynamic range gyroscope, a high-g accelerometer, a proximity sensor and four ambient light sensors, twice the usual count, which is the clearest hardware sign that this is a phone with two displays.

None of this appeared on stage, and Apple has not explained any of it in a press release. Here is what the spec sheet says, what each entry does, and how the Duo’s positioning compares with Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, the two other new Apple devices with published GPS details.

Dual-frequency GPS and six satellite systems

Apple lists the Duo’s positioning as dual-frequency GPS. On Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple describes the same feature as using the L1 and L5 signals, and the point of listening on two frequencies is to improve accuracy where a single signal bounces off buildings or trees. Apple has not published an accuracy figure for iPhone Duo.

The six systems are GPS (United States), GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (European Union), QZSS (Japan’s regional system), BeiDou (China) and NavIC (India’s regional system). NavIC is the entry to note: Apple’s spec sheets for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 do not list it, so iPhone Duo is the only device in the September lineup with a published NavIC line.

Apple has not published a GPS line for iPhone 18 Pro in the material we have, so we cannot say whether the Duo’s list is longer than the Pro’s. Barometer, gyroscope and accelerometer: the motion sensors

The barometer measures air pressure, which is how the phone tracks elevation changes such as flights of stairs. The high dynamic range gyroscope and high-g accelerometer are the standard iPhone pairing for orientation, motion and crash-style impacts, and Apple lists them without further claims.

What makes these sensors more interesting on iPhone Duo is the software. Apple’s product page says iOS responds to how the phone is posed, with StandBy, landscape, portrait, seated and standing positions. Apple has not said which sensors detect the pose or the hinge angle, so we cannot attribute that to the gyroscope specifically. Four ambient light sensors, proximity, Touch ID and UWB

A single ambient light sensor is the norm. Apple’s tech specs list four on iPhone Duo and give no explanation. The most straightforward reading is that a foldable has two display surfaces facing different directions, and both displays support True Tone and Always-On, both of which depend on knowing the light around each panel. Treat that as our interpretation, not Apple’s statement.

The proximity sensor, also listed, is the component that turns the screen off when the phone is held to the ear. Apple does not say whether the Duo has one per display.

The Duo’s biometric sensor is Touch ID in the side button, which works with the phone open or closed, supports multiple fingers and can be paired with unlock via Apple Watch. There is no Face ID. Apple also lists a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, for precision finding of nearby devices, and NFC with reader mode and Express Cards for Apple Pay and transit.

What Apple has not said

  • Any GPS accuracy figure, or which frequencies the dual-frequency receiver uses on iPhone Duo.
  • Which sensors detect the hinge position for the posable modes.
  • Why there are four ambient light sensors, or where they sit.
  • Whether the Duo has more than one proximity sensor.
  • Whether iPhone 18 Pro shares the same positioning list; Apple’s figures we have do not include it.
