iPhone Duo is made from 35 percent recycled material by weight, with 100 percent recycled cobalt in both batteries, 85 percent recycled titanium in the enclosure and a hinge cover 3D-printed from 100 percent recycled titanium, according to Apple’s press release. It is built with 60 percent renewable electricity in manufacturing and ships in 100 percent fiber-based packaging.

Those figures sit slightly below iPhone 18 Pro’s 40 percent recycled content overall, and the difference comes down to materials: the Duo is titanium where the 18 Pro is aluminum. Here is every recycled-content figure Apple has published for the Duo, what the 3D-printed hinge cover is, and how the sheet compares with the 18 Pro.

Where the recycled titanium goes

The Duo’s structure is Grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, per Apple’s press release, and the enclosure is 85 percent recycled titanium. Apple’s tech specs page also lists a 100 percent recycled aluminum frame and 95 percent recycled lithium in the batteries. Apple has not explained how the aluminum frame and the titanium enclosure relate to each other inside the phone, so we report both figures as Apple lists them.

The hinge cover is the most specific claim on the sheet. Apple says it is 3D-printed from 100 percent recycled titanium. The hinge itself contains more than 100 components with custom adhesives for flex relief. Apple has not said whether those internal hinge components use recycled material, only that the cover does.

3D printing titanium, rather than machining it from a solid block, uses only the metal the part needs, which is one reason a printed part can be made from fully recycled feedstock. Apple has not published how much material the process saves compared with machining, so that reasoning is ours, not Apple’s. Our iPhone Duo design rundown covers the frame and hinge in more detail.

Cobalt, lithium and the dual battery

iPhone Duo has a dual battery system with one cell per side of the fold. Apple’s press release says both cells use 100 percent recycled cobalt, and the tech specs add 95 percent recycled lithium. Cobalt is the figure Apple emphasizes on both new iPhones: iPhone 18 Pro makes the same 100 percent recycled cobalt claim.

Apple rates the Duo at up to 24 hours of typical use and up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display, or 31 hours on the inner display. It has not published the capacity of either cell in milliamp-hours, which means the recycled percentages cannot be converted into a weight of recovered metal. See our iPhone Duo battery explainer for the hour ratings.

The five-point gap in overall recycled content is not a lower effort on the Duo. Both phones use the same 85 percent figure for their main structural metal, but the Duo carries a titanium frame, a hinge, two batteries and two displays in a 254 g body, and Apple has not published which of those components pull the overall figure down. The iPhone 18 Pro recycled materials breakdown has the aluminum phone’s full sheet.

For context across Apple’s fall lineup, our recycled materials by the numbers comparison puts iPhone 18 Pro alongside Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.

Manufacturing electricity and packaging

Apple’s press release says 60 percent of the electricity used to manufacture iPhone Duo comes from renewable sources. That is a claim about supplier energy, not about the phone’s own charging, and Apple has not said which stages of production the figure covers or how it is measured. Apple did not publish an equivalent percentage for iPhone 18 Pro in its release.

Packaging is 100 percent fiber-based on both phones. Apple has not said whether the Duo’s box differs in size from the 18 Pro’s; the contents are the same, an iPhone and a 1 m USB-C cable, with no power adapter.

What Apple has not said

  • How the 100 percent recycled aluminum frame on the tech specs page relates to the 85 percent recycled titanium enclosure in the press release.
  • Whether the more than 100 hinge components, as opposed to the hinge cover, use recycled material.
  • The mAh capacity of either battery cell, so recycled cobalt and lithium cannot be expressed by weight.
  • Recycled content figures for rare earth elements, gold, tin or copper. Neither the Duo’s press release nor its tech specs mention them.
  • A carbon footprint figure or product environmental report for iPhone Duo.
  • Which components account for the 35 percent overall figure being lower than the 18 Pro’s 40 percent.
