Apple claims iPhone Duo delivers 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, and it credits a custom vapor chamber inside a body that is 5.2 mm thick when open, according to Apple’s press release. The chip itself is the same 2-nanometer A20 Pro that ships in iPhone 18 Pro, with a 6-core CPU up to 20 percent faster and a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro.
Sustained performance is a different claim from peak performance, and for a foldable it is the more important one. Here is what Apple has said, how the Duo lines up against iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro, and where the claim stops.

What ‘sustained performance’ means
Peak performance is how fast a chip runs in a short burst, before heat builds up. Sustained performance is how fast it keeps running once it has been working for minutes rather than seconds. A phone can post strong peak numbers and still slow down during a long game, a 4K export or an extended Split View session as the chip pulls back to stay within its thermal limits.

Apple’s 35 percent figure is a sustained claim, and it is measured against iPhone 17 Pro, not iPhone 18 Pro. Apple has not said what workload it used, how long the test ran, or what the ambient temperature was. It also has not said whether the phone was open or closed during the test, which matters on a device whose two halves each hold a battery and share a hinge.
Apple’s stated reason is a custom vapor chamber. A vapor chamber is a sealed, flat cavity containing a small amount of liquid that evaporates at the hot spot, moves as vapor to the cooler edges, condenses and cycles back. It spreads heat further than a solid plate can, so the chip can run harder for longer.
Why cooling is harder in a foldable
iPhone Duo is 5.2 mm thick when open, according to Apple’s product page, and Apple calls it the thinnest iPhone. That leaves little vertical room for a heat spreader, and the internals are split across two halves with a battery cell on each side, so the chip cannot use the whole chassis as a heat sink the way a single-slab phone can.
The frame is Grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, and the hinge has more than 100 components with custom adhesives for flex relief. Apple has not said which half of the phone houses the A20 Pro, or how the vapor chamber is shaped to fit around the hinge.

The A19 Pro figures come from Apple’s tech specs for iPhone 17 Pro. The sustained figure compares whole phones, cooling included, which makes it the more useful number.
How the Duo compares with iPhone 18 Pro
iPhone 18 Pro uses the same A20 Pro and gets its own cooling story. Apple’s press release for the 18 Pro describes a next-generation vapor chamber attached directly to the chip, and cites about three times the cooling performance of the prior design. Apple has not published a sustained-performance percentage for iPhone 18 Pro, and it has not published a cooling-performance multiple for the Duo, so the two phones’ thermal claims cannot be lined up directly.
The Duo’s A20 Pro also carries a job the 18 Pro’s does not. According to keynote coverage, a custom display engine drives both the 7.6-inch inner and 5.4-inch outer displays at once.
