If you bought an iPhone 17 Pro Max last September, iPhone Duo asks you to swap a 6.9-inch phone with a 4x telephoto and 39 hours of video playback for a 7.6-inch folding display, a 2x crop in place of that telephoto, and 44 hours of video closed or 31 hours open, at $1,999 against the $1,199 you paid. On Apple’s spec sheets the Duo wins on screen area, chip and multitasking; the 17 Pro Max keeps the zoom, Face ID, ProRes video and $800.

Size, weight and displays
Closed, the Duo is 84.1 x 117.8 x 11.3 mm on Apple’s product page: 46 mm shorter than the 17 Pro Max at 163.4 x 78.0 x 8.75 mm, 6 mm wider and 2.55 mm thicker. Open, it is 164.6 mm wide and 5.2 mm thick. At 254 g it weighs 21 g more.

The 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch OLED at 2868 x 1320 and 460 ppi. The Duo’s inner display is 7.6 inches at 1878 x 2670 and 430 ppi, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max panel of the same 6.9-inch size and resolution. Its 5.4-inch outer display is 1398 x 2034 at 460 ppi. All three run ProMotion up to 120Hz at 1000 nits typical, 1600 nits peak HDR and 3000 nits outdoors, and the Duo’s inner panel adds a nano-texture finish that Apple says minimizes the visible crease.
Cameras: what the 17 Pro Max keeps
The 17 Pro Max has three 48MP cameras, including a 100 mm f/2.8 4x tetraprism that gives 8x optical-quality zoom and a 16x optical zoom range. The Duo has two, and its 2x is a 12MP crop at 52 mm with a 4x optical range and 10x digital zoom.

The Duo’s additions are form-factor features: Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime use the outer display while the rear cameras face the subject, and Dual Capture records front and rear at once in 4K 30. Chip, battery and charging
The A20 Pro has a 6-core CPU Apple rates up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster, a dual 16-core Neural Engine and 50 percent more memory bandwidth. Apple’s press release claims 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, credited to a custom vapor chamber.
Apple rates the 17 Pro Max at up to 39 hours of video playback and 35 streamed. The Duo is rated at 44 hours of video and 37 streamed on the outer display, 31 and 26 on the inner display, and up to 24 hours of typical use assuming equal time on each. The 17 Pro Max reaches 50 percent in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter; the Duo takes about 20 minutes with a 60W adapter or 30 minutes with a 35W adapter over MagSafe. Both have MagSafe and Qi2 at 25W, USB 3 at 10 Gb/s, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6; the Duo adds DisplayPort, Thread, the C2 modem and two years of satellite features.
Price, trade-in and what you give up
The Duo is $1,999, $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199 for 256GB to 2TB, or $83.29 a month over 24 months, with an Apple Upgrade lease from $57.99 a month. The 17 Pro Max launched at $1,199 with the same four tiers. Trading it in at Apple’s ‘up to’ $885 estimate would bring a 256GB Duo to $1,114.
A 17 Pro Max owner who folds gives up:
- The 4x and 8x telephoto, replaced by a 2x crop
- Face ID, replaced by Touch ID in the side button, which works open or closed
- ProRes RAW, Genlock and Apple Log 2, none of which appear on the Duo’s spec page
- A physical SIM anywhere: the Duo is eSIM only worldwide
- A September purchase: Duo pre-orders open October 16 and it ships October 23

- Whether the Duo can record ProRes or Log video; the spec page does not list them
- A trade-in offer specific to 17 Pro Max owners; $885 is an estimate that depends on condition
- Which 28 countries join the Duo launch on October 30
