iPhone 17 launched at $799 and iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, a $1,200 gap at launch prices; against the $929 Apple’s Store page charges today for a 256GB iPhone 17, the gap is $1,070. The money buys a second display, a folding 7.6-inch panel, the A20 Pro, titanium, USB 3, 14 more hours of video playback closed and a 2TB option, while the rear cameras are the same on paper.

The chip gap is real but Apple only quantifies it against the A19 Pro, not the A19: the A20 Pro CPU is up to 20 percent faster, the GPU up to 40 percent faster, with 50 percent more memory bandwidth. Both phones run full Apple Intelligence and the Siri AI beta in iOS 27, so software is not a reason to spend more; the Duo ships with iOS 27.1 and adds Split View for two apps side by side.
Cameras: almost the same hardware
This is where the price gap disappears. Apple lists the same 48MP Fusion main camera at 26 mm and f/1.6 with sensor-shift OIS on both phones, the same 48MP Ultra Wide at 13 mm and f/2.2, and the same 12MP 2x optical-quality telephoto at 52 mm cropped from the main sensor. Both have a 4x optical zoom range with 0.5x, 1x and 2x steps, and neither has a telephoto lens.
The differences are in video and on the front. The iPhone 17 records 4K Dolby Vision at 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps; the Duo goes to 100 and 120 fps and adds Dual Capture in 4K 30 and Action mode up to 2.8K 60. The iPhone 17’s front camera is an 18MP Center Stage unit at f/1.9; the Duo’s outer front camera is 12MP at f/2.2, with an under-display f/1.8 camera on the inner screen limited to 1080p. Battery, charging and ports
Apple rates the iPhone 17 at up to 30 hours of video playback and 27 streamed. The Duo’s outer display beats that at 44 and 37 hours, and its inner display comes in just under at 31 and 26; typical use is up to 24 hours assuming equal time on each screen. On charging the iPhone 17 is quicker to 50 percent: 20 minutes with a 40W adapter, or 30 minutes with a 30W adapter over MagSafe, against the Duo’s roughly 20 minutes with a 60W adapter or 30 minutes with 35W plus MagSafe. Both take MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 25W.
The port is a clear win for the Duo. The iPhone 17’s USB-C is USB 2 at 480 Mb/s; the Duo’s is USB 3 at 10 Gb/s with DisplayPort output, so it can drive an external display and move large video files far faster.
Price today, monthly and trade-in
Apple’s Store page lists the iPhone 17 at $929 for 256GB and $1,129 for 512GB unlocked, and shows ‘From $899’ with a $30 AT&T connectivity discount. Those are above the $799 launch price; Apple has not explained why, and we report the numbers as shown. The Duo is $1,999, $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199 for 256GB to 2TB, or $83.29 a month over 24 months, with an Apple Upgrade lease from $57.99 a month. Apple’s Trade In page values an iPhone 17 at up to $585, which would bring a 256GB Duo to $1,414. Between the two sits the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199, with the variable-aperture camera, a 4x telephoto and Face ID, shipping September 18.
