Apple’s iPhone lineup now runs from $699 to $1,999 across seven models, and only two of the six price steps between them buy enough capability to justify the money: the $100 from iPhone 16 to iPhone 17, and the $100 from iPhone Air to iPhone 18 Pro. Every other rung on the ladder is a size, a weight or a shape preference rather than a capability upgrade.
The ladder itself changed on September 9. Apple discontinued iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the four older models it kept are each listed $100 higher than they were the day before: iPhone 17e at $699, iPhone 16 at $799, iPhone 17 at $899 and iPhone Air at $1,099. The current figures are Apple’s own Store listings. The earlier ones are a matter of record, and Apple announced no increase, so treat the rise as something that shows up in the prices rather than something Apple said.

One caution before the verdicts. Those are Apple’s starting prices, and on two models the starting price is not the unlocked price. Apple’s Store page records iPhone 16 at $829 for 128GB unlocked and iPhone 17 at $929 for 256GB unlocked, and Apple applies a $30 connectivity discount to those two models only, which is exactly the gap in both cases. On iPhone 18 Pro the same pattern is larger: $1,199 with carrier connectivity against $1,299 unlocked, and Apple does not print that delta anywhere.

The two steps worth paying for
The $799 to $899 step, iPhone 16 to iPhone 17, is the best hundred dollars in the lineup. It buys ProMotion at up to 120Hz, a 6.3-inch display instead of 6.1, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide in place of a 12MP one, an 18MP Center Stage front camera instead of 12MP, eight more hours of video playback, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, and 256GB as the base rather than 128GB. The catch is the port: iPhone 17 stays on USB 2 at 480Mb/s, so large video transfers are slow.
The $1,099 to $1,199 step, iPhone Air to iPhone 18 Pro, is the second. It restores the 48MP Ultra Wide that iPhone Air does not have, adds a 48MP 4x telephoto at 100mm plus an 8x optical-quality crop at 200mm, brings the variable aperture with stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, moves to USB 3 at 10Gb/s, and takes video playback from 27 hours to 36. The catch is physical: 211 g and 8.75 mm against 165 g and 5.64 mm.
The $200 step that buys less phone
Going from iPhone 17 at $899 to iPhone Air at $1,099 costs $200 and removes the Ultra Wide camera entirely, drops video playback from 30 hours to 27, and lowers MagSafe from 25W to 20W. What it adds is a titanium frame, Ceramic Shield 2 front and back, a 6.5-inch display, the A19 Pro chip and the thinnest, lightest body Apple sells.
That is a real product for a specific buyer, and a poor value step for everyone else, because $100 more than iPhone Air buys the full Pro camera system. If thinness is not the reason you are shopping, skip this rung in either direction.
The top of the ladder and the $700 fold
The $1,199 to $1,299 step is not a capability step. iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max share the A20 Pro, the same three 48MP cameras and the same variable aperture. The $100 buys a 6.9-inch display instead of 6.3 and 45 hours of video playback instead of 36, at 249 g instead of 211 g. Decide it on size and battery, not on features.
The last step is the largest. iPhone Duo costs $700 more than iPhone 18 Pro Max for a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer one and a 254 g titanium folding body. It gives up more than its price suggests: Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID, no telephoto lens beyond a 2x crop, dual eSIM with no physical SIM support, and no ProRes listed on its spec sheet. It also does not ship until October 23. Buy it for the fold or not at all.

For most people the answer is iPhone 17 at $899. For anyone who photographs seriously it is iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199, and skipping iPhone Air on the way there saves nothing but costs nothing either.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published per-device AppleCare+ prices for any product it launched in September 2026, so the cost of protecting any of these phones is unknown. It publishes a trade-in range of $175 to $885 in the US for an iPhone 13 or later but no per-model table. The detailed spec sheet for iPhone 17e is not confirmed here, which is a reason to read Apple’s own page before buying the cheapest rung sight unseen. Apple also gave no reason for the $100 increases, because it did not announce them.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max pre-orders opened Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with those two models in stores Friday, September 18 and a second wave of countries on Friday, September 25. iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14 on every phone in the table, free. iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 and it ships Friday, October 23.
