If an iPhone 18 Pro is stolen, Find My and Activation Lock will protect what is on it and make it very hard for anyone else to use. Neither will buy you a replacement, and that distinction decides what a lost or stolen $1,199 phone actually costs you.
Of everything Apple has published for this launch, one plan names theft and loss: AppleCare One Family, at $49.99 a month from September 14, which Apple says includes theft and loss protection for eligible iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Accidental damage cover is a separate benefit and does not replace a phone that is gone.
| Cover | Does Apple name theft and loss |
|---|---|
| AppleCare One Family, $49.99 a month from September 14 | Yes, for eligible iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch |
| AppleCare One, $19.99 a month for up to three products | Apple names theft and loss on the family tier; it has not published the same line for the single plan |
| Accidental damage cover for drops and spills | No, Apple lists it as a separate benefit |
| Per-device AppleCare+ for iPhone 18 Pro | Price not published |
| Apple Upgrade, the Klarna lease | AppleCare is not included |
| Find My and Activation Lock | Built in and free, and they pay nothing |
Find My and Activation Lock protect the phone, not the wallet
Apple’s published behaviour here is consistent and worth being precise about. Find My locates a device and lets you mark it as lost or erase it remotely. Activation Lock ties the hardware to your Apple Account, so it cannot be erased and set up again by someone else without your credentials.

Set us as a preferred source and our Apple reporting ranks higher in your Google Search results and Discover feed — one tap, no account changes.
You can see the same mechanism from the other side in Apple’s trade-in instructions, which tell sellers to back up, turn off Find My and sign out before a device changes hands. That step exists precisely because the lock otherwise survives an erase.
What that achieves is real. A stolen iPhone 18 Pro is difficult to resell as a working phone, and your photos, messages and accounts stay yours. What it does not achieve is a replacement handset. Apple also lists more flexible Find My location sharing in iOS 27, and watchOS 27 consolidates devices, people and items into a single map view on Apple Watch.
Which kinds of cover include loss and theft, and which do not
| Kind of cover | Loss | Theft | Whose terms apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| AppleCare One Family | Named by Apple | Named by Apple | Apple |
| Accidental damage cover | Not what it covers | Not what it covers | Apple |
| Manufacturer warranty | Not what it covers | Not what it covers | Apple |
| Credit card purchase protection | Check your guide to benefits | Check your guide to benefits | Your card issuer |
| Home contents insurance | Check whether unspecified loss is included | Check whether cover applies away from home | Your insurer |
| Find My and Activation Lock | No payout | No payout | Apple, at no cost |
The rows that say check are not evasions. Card benefits and contents policies are individual documents, they differ between products and between countries, and the same three-way comparison comes out differently for two people who bought the identical phone on the same day.
Credit card and home insurance: the general shape
Purchase protection is generally a benefit written by your card issuer and set out in a guide to benefits for that specific card, typically limited by a window from the purchase date, by a cap per claim, and by a requirement that the item was bought with that card. Which events it names is card-specific, and theft and loss are frequently treated differently from each other.
Contents insurance covers possessions rather than a named device, so the deciding questions are structural: whether cover extends away from the home, whether a single-item limit sits below $1,199, what excess applies, and what a claim does to your renewal. Terms vary, and the only version that matters is the one on your own schedule.
The lease gap most people will not notice
Apple Upgrade replaced the iPhone Upgrade Program on July 28, is provided by Klarna, and does not include AppleCare. Apple’s own wording is that customers can add an AppleCare subscription, which means a leased phone arrives uncovered unless you pay separately.
Apple has not published what happens to the remaining payments if a leased iPhone is lost or stolen. On a 12 or 24 month term that is worth putting to Apple or Klarna before signing rather than after, because a lost lease is still a contract.
The six-claim limit and the four-year rule
Two published limits shape what the family plan is worth in a bad year. Apple caps claims at six a year across the whole group of up to six people, so one unlucky member can consume most of the household allowance. Eligibility is capped by age too: Apple’s wording is most devices less than four years old and in good working condition.

AppleCare One Family becomes available on Monday, September 14. iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT and the phone ships on Friday, September 18, so the sensible sequence is to settle the coverage question at checkout and switch Find My on during setup, in that order.
