Podcasts and Apple Music Both Got Apple TV Updates This Year, but Not the Same Ones

Apple’s June 9, 2026 services announcement updated both Apple Podcasts and Apple Music for Apple TV in the same release, and the two apps did not get the same treatment. Podcasts got a full interface redesign with video playback. Apple Music got a DJ-style transition tool and a higher audio quality tier, with no redesign mentioned at all.

One more difference is easy to miss: Apple’s own list of where a new Podcasts search feature works does not include Apple TV, or HomePod either.

Apple describes the tvOS Podcasts redesign around video playback and a sidebar for navigation, a genuine interface change rather than a feature bolted onto the existing layout. The Picture-in-Picture addition is specific to macOS, not tvOS. And the search feature, which lets a listener search inside a single show rather than across the whole catalogue, comes with an explicit list of five destinations: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro and the web. Apple TV is not on that list, and neither is HomePod, even though both play podcasts today.

Apple Music’s Apple TV changes are all about what plays and how it sounds. AutoMix, which blends transitions between songs, now works on tvOS and HomePod as well as iPhone. Hi-Res Lossless brings a higher audio tier to tvOS specifically. Neither change touches the app’s layout the way the Podcasts redesign does, and Apple’s announcement does not mention any interface work for Apple Music on Apple TV at all.

The platform Apple’s own list leaves out

Vision Pro, a far smaller product by Apple’s own account of its 2026 activity, made Apple’s published list for Search within show. Apple TV and HomePod, both far more widely owned, did not. Apple’s material does not explain the omission, and it may simply reflect where the engineering landed first rather than any lasting decision. Either way, it is Apple’s own list, not a guess, that draws the line where it currently sits.

Why one app got a redesign and the other got new playback features

Apple’s announcement does not explain why the two apps received different kinds of updates in the same release. What is published is the shape of each: Podcasts changed how it looks and where video plays, while Apple Music changed what plays and how it sounds, without a matching redesign of its own tvOS interface. Whether an Apple Music interface update for Apple TV is planned is not something Apple has stated, on the pages checked for this article or anywhere else in the material reviewed. It is possible the two teams simply shipped whatever was ready in June, and that a later release brings the two apps closer together on Apple TV. Apple’s own record so far does not say either way.

What Apple has not said

  • Whether Search within show is coming to Apple TV or HomePod.
  • Why Apple Music’s tvOS update did not include an interface redesign.
  • Any timeline beyond the June 9, 2026 announcement date itself.

Today is Saturday, September 12, 2026. tvOS 27 and macOS 27 both arrive free on Monday, September 14, the same day as iOS 27, and that release is the next point to check whether Apple’s published platform list for Search within show has grown to include Apple TV. Anyone streaming either app through an iPhone 18 Pro, an iPhone Duo, or a set of AirPods 5 will see the same split Apple’s own pages describe, regardless of which device does the listening. The wider context for all of it sits in Apple’s September event recap, even though this particular change predates it by three months.
