Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Satellite: Apple’s Own How-To Page Still Says Ultra 3

Buyers pre-ordering Apple Watch Ultra 4 this weekend on the strength of its satellite features are relying on two Apple documents that do not yet say quite the same thing. Apple’s Ultra 4 press release describes the two-year free satellite window as applying to ā€œUltra 3 and later,ā€ but Apple’s own dedicated satellite how-to support page still names only Apple Watch Ultra 3 as the required model.

What Apple’s two documents each say

Apple’s September 9 Ultra 4 announcement states that the two-year included period for satellite communications ā€œapplies to Ultra 3 and later,ā€ language that plainly reaches Ultra 4. Apple’s separate, longer-standing support page, titled around using Emergency SOS via satellite on Apple Watch Ultra 3, has not been rewritten to add Ultra 4 by name, even though the feature is expected to behave the same way on both watches.

The Airplane Mode detail that surprises people

Apple’s support page states plainly that satellite features are not available on Apple Watch Ultra if a nearby iPhone is in Airplane Mode. That runs against a common instinct, since Airplane Mode feels like the setting most likely to help a satellite connection by quieting cellular and Wi-Fi radios. Apple’s own page treats it as the one setting that blocks the feature outright instead.

The country list Ultra 4 buyers should actually check

Apple’s Watch satellite support page lists the same roughly twenty countries and territories as its iPhone equivalent: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S., with further island territories in Apple’s own footnotes. A country missing from that list does not gain the feature just because the watch inside it is new, a point that matters just as much for anyone comparing Ultra 4 against Apple Watch Series 12, which does not carry satellite features at all.

Why this gap matters for a pre-order this weekend

None of this puts Ultra 4’s satellite capability in doubt. Apple’s marketing and its press release are consistent that Ultra 4 carries the feature forward, and Apple’s full September 9 event recap covered it alongside the rest of the watch’s specifications. It does mean a buyer searching Apple’s own site for step-by-step satellite instructions on a brand new Ultra 4 currently lands on a page written for the previous model, with no separate Ultra 4 version published yet, a gap that also touches anyone weighing satellite against the iPhone 18 Pro’s own version of the same feature.

It is worth remembering that Ultra 3 owners lived with this exact page for a full year before Ultra 4 existed, so the naming gap is less a warning sign about the new watch than a reminder that Apple’s support library updates on its own schedule, separate from the one its press releases and product pages follow at launch.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published an Apple Watch Ultra 4-specific satellite support page, has not said when its Ultra 3-titled page will be updated to add the new model by name, and has not clarified whether the Airplane Mode restriction applies identically across Emergency SOS, Messages and Roadside Assistance via satellite, or only to some of the three.

As of September 13, 2026, five days before Apple Watch Ultra 4 reaches stores on September 18, Apple’s own satellite documentation for the Watch has not yet caught up to the hardware it is now selling alongside it.
