Apple is selling two cases of its own for iPhone Duo: the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand at $129 and the iPhone Duo Case at $79. Both are listed on Apple’s U.S. online store, and Apple says both work with MagSafe, Qi2 25W and Qi-certified chargers.

Apple introduced the pair in its iPhone Duo pre-order announcement, describing them as accessories designed “to complement iPhone Duo.” The newsroom post shortens the first name to “iPhone Duo Folio,” while the store listing uses the full name, iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand.

Apple sells each case in two colors, and the price is the same for both colors.

U.S. buyers who choose Apple Card Monthly Installments at checkout see the Folio listed at $10.75 per month for 12 months and the Case at $6.58 per month for 12 months. Apple’s store lists only the case itself under “What’s in the Box” for both products.

The Folio’s kickstand is the main reason to pay more

The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is made from TechWoven, which Apple calls “a custom technical fabric.” Apple’s store page says the case is “thin and light” and has “an integrated kickstand that enables a range of angles for reading, viewing, or making FaceTime calls.” When you do not need it, Apple says, “the kickstand snaps neatly back into place.”

That stand lines up with a few things Apple is pitching for iPhone Duo itself. Apple’s release says iPhone Duo can enter StandBy “on either the outer or inner display,” even when it is not charging, and turn into a photo frame, a widget hub or a clock. It also says the new FaceTime camera under the inner display works “whether iPhone Duo is held open or propped on a surface for hands-free calls.” A built-in kickstand covers the propping part without a separate stand.

Charging also works with the Folio on. Apple’s store copy says you can “snap a MagSafe charger or Qi2 25W or Qi-certified charger on the outside or behind the open kickstand to charge.” So you do not have to fold the stand away to top up the battery.

The iPhone Duo Case is the lighter option

The $79 iPhone Duo Case takes a different approach. Apple describes it as a “two-part case” that is “thin and light, wrapping around both sides of iPhone Duo to protect it from front to back.” It is “made from polycarbonate with a matte coating” and comes in sand or navy blue.

In the newsroom post, Apple calls it “light yet protective” and says the colors “complement” the two iPhone Duo finishes, which are star white and night sky.

For charging, Apple says to “leave the case on your device and snap on a MagSafe charger, or set it on a Qi2 25W or Qi-certified charger.”

Both cases snap on with magnets

Apple says both cases have built-in magnets “that align perfectly with iPhone Duo,” which it says give “a magical attach experience” and faster wireless charging. iPhone Duo itself supports MagSafe wireless charging and Qi2 25W or Qi-certified wireless chargers, according to the FAQ on Apple’s iPhone Duo page.

Apple’s iPhone Duo page sums the pair up in a line each. “The iPhone Duo Case offers lightweight protection in stylish colors,” it says, and “the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand features a retractable kickstand for a range of helpful viewing angles.”

Which one to buy

The choice mostly comes down to whether you want a stand.

  • Pick the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand ($129) if you plan to watch video, read, use StandBy or take hands-free FaceTime calls with the phone standing on a table, and you like a fabric finish.
  • Pick the iPhone Duo Case ($79) if you want the thinner, cheaper option with front-to-back coverage and plan to hold the phone or lay it flat most of the time.
  • Either way, your MagSafe and Qi2 25W chargers keep working without taking the case off.

Apple’s store pages do not list a weight or thickness for either case.

How to order

Both cases are on Apple’s online store in the iPhone accessories section, under Cases and Protection, and you can add one to the same order as the phone. iPhone Duo pre-orders opened on October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and Apple lists the phone as available starting October 23.
