The iPhone 18 Pro, from $1,199, arrives on September 18 with a long list of changes: a 2-nanometer A20 Pro, a variable aperture camera, up to 45 hours of video playback on the Pro Max and a smaller Dynamic Island. Not all of them matter equally.
This ranking is our read on which upgrades will change how the phone is used day to day, based only on what Apple has published in its press release. Where Apple has given a number, we lean on it; where it has not, we say so. The full spec sheet is in our iPhone 18 Pro announcement coverage.
Features 10 to 6: useful, but not the reason to buy
10. Video upgrades. Cinematic effects now run up to 60 fps, time-lapse gains 4K Dolby Vision HDR, and Audio Mix adds music isolation. Meaningful for people who shoot video, incremental for everyone else.

9. 2TB storage. A 2TB tier is new to iPhone, and it matters for anyone shooting the Dolby Vision video above. Apple has not published the price, which is why it sits this low.
8. N1 and C2 chips. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread come from the N1, and the C2 modem uses 15 percent less energy than the C1X with mmWave 5G in the US.
7. Vapor chamber cooling. Apple attaches a next-generation vapor chamber directly to the chip and cites about three times the cooling performance of the prior design. That matters for sustained gaming and video export more than for everyday use.
6. Apple Reference Image. The phone stores an untouched original with verification metadata alongside edits, so a photo can be shown to come from a real capture rather than AI.
Features 5 to 1: the upgrades that define the phone
5. The smaller Dynamic Island. It now shows up to three Live Activities at once while keeping Face ID, which turns the cutout into more of a status area than before. We covered the pre-event 3-in-1 Dynamic Island leak that turned out to be accurate.
4. Fast charging. Apple says 50 percent in about 15 minutes wired and 30 minutes wireless, and five minutes on a cable gives the Pro Max about seven hours of video playback.
3. The A20 Pro. Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip has a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro, a 32-core Neural Engine with double the AI processing and 50 percent more memory bandwidth. It underpins Siri AI and nearly everything else on this list.
2. Battery life. The Pro Max is rated at up to 45 hours of video playback, described by Apple as up to 30 hours of use on a full charge, and the 6.3-inch Pro roughly matches last year’s 17 Pro Max at 36 hours. Both figures are for eSIM-only models.
1. The variable aperture camera. The 48MP Fusion main camera moves from f/1.48 to f/4 with six laser-cut blades, with manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app, Smart Focus subject tracking and faster Night mode. It is the one change on this list that adds a physical control photographers can use, rather than a faster version of something the phone already did.
What did not make the top 10
- The four colors: Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, with Black returning after the iPhone 17 Pro skipped it
- Photographic Styles with texture and grain controls
- The new rear finish on a design carried over from the 17 Pro
- Updated Clear, silicone and FineWoven cases plus a wrist strap
- 40 percent recycled content overall and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery
