AirPods 4 With ANC to AirPods 5: Only the $149 Model Is a Clean Upgrade

If you already own AirPods 4 with ANC, the $129 AirPods 5 is not the straight upgrade it looks like. Apple’s specs page rates the cheaper new model at up to four hours of listening with noise cancellation on and up to 20 hours in total with the case, which are the same two figures Apple publishes for the earbuds already in your pocket.

The $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case is the model that beats your current pair on every line. Apple’s press release puts it plainly: “up to five hours of playback with ANC on a single charge, one hour longer than AirPods 4 with ANC.”

What the $129 model matches, and what it does not

On Apple’s tech specs the standard AirPods 5 is rated for up to four hours of listening with Active Noise Cancellation on, and up to 20 hours in total with its case. Those are the same numbers Apple published for AirPods 4 with ANC two years ago.

The battery gain at $129 arrives only with noise cancellation switched off, where AirPods 5 is rated for up to six hours against five. The dust and water rating also improves, from IP54 to IP57 on both the buds and the case.

Physically almost nothing moves. Each earbud still weighs 4.3 g, the case is still 46.2 by 50.1 by 21.2 mm, and both generations run the H2 chip over Bluetooth 5.3.

The two case features the cheaper model drops

Your AirPods 4 with ANC case charges over USB-C, on a Qi charger and on an Apple Watch charger, and it carries a speaker that plays a sound through Find My. The $129 AirPods 5 case charges over USB-C only and has no speaker.

That is the unusual part of this particular upgrade. Moving from AirPods 4 with ANC to the cheapest AirPods 5 takes away two case abilities you already have, in exchange for stronger noise cancellation and a better water rating.

It is also why the $20 gap between the two AirPods 5 models matters more to you than to someone buying their first pair. For an existing AirPods 4 with ANC owner, the $149 case is not an upgrade so much as a way of keeping what you had.

Swipe volume is the one control neither of the other two has. Apple lists a force sensor on every model in the table, but only the Wireless Charging Case version gets the volume swipe along the stem.

What both new models add over AirPods 4 with ANC

  • Noise cancellation that Apple says removes up to 50 percent more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC
  • Live Translation, which Apple’s AirPods comparison page does not list for either AirPods 4 model
  • Voice Isolation and studio-quality audio recording when the buds are used as a microphone
  • Hands-free Siri AI, which needs iOS 27 and an iPhone that runs Apple Intelligence
  • IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance on the buds and the case
  • 40 percent recycled material by weight, per Apple’s AirPods 5 page

Head-gesture replies, a nod to accept and a shake to decline, are listed for AirPods 5 as well. Apple has tied several of these features to its new iPhone software rather than to the earbuds alone, so an older iPhone will not unlock all of them.

What Apple has not said

Apple publishes no trade-in value for any AirPods model. Its Trade In page routes you through condition questions rather than showing a per-model figure, so there is no published number to subtract from either price.

Apple’s AirPods 4 shop URL now serves the AirPods 5 page, and no current Apple price for AirPods 4 with ANC appeared on the pages checked, so the $179 above is the launch price from Apple’s September 2024 press release rather than a price you can pay today. Apple also does not list talk time for AirPods 5, and the specs page names no colour.

Both AirPods 5 models have been open for pre-order since the September 9 event and reach stores on Friday, September 18 in the US and more than 65 countries. Live Translation and hands-free Siri AI arrive with iOS 27, a free update on Monday, September 14.
