AirPods 5 bring Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode and Conversation Awareness to Apple’s open-ear earbuds alongside the headline Active Noise Cancellation, according to Apple’s press release. The three listening modes ship on both the $129 AirPods 5 and the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, in stores on Friday, September 18.
The reason these modes matter on AirPods 5 is the noise cancellation underneath them. Apple says the new multiport acoustic architecture, inspired by AirPods Pro 3, and improved computational audio remove up to 50 percent more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, which gives the modes that blend cancellation with outside sound more to work with. Our pre-event AirPods 5 round-up had expected a stronger ANC push, and Apple delivered one.
Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency and Adaptive Audio: what each mode does
Apple’s release lists the modes but does not restate how each behaves, so the descriptions below draw on how Apple has defined the same modes on previous AirPods. Apple has not said whether any of them work differently on AirPods 5.

Apple’s release does not include figures for how much sound Transparency mode lets through or how quickly Adaptive Audio switches between states, and it does not describe any AirPods 5-specific tuning for Conversation Awareness.
How the open-ear design changes things
AirPods 5 are open-ear earbuds, not the sealed in-ear design of AirPods Pro, and Apple positions them as the first open-ear AirPods with Active Noise Cancellation at this level. That makes the modes that mix outside sound with cancellation particularly relevant, because an open design already lets in more of the world than a sealed tip does.
Apple credits the improvement to the multiport acoustic architecture and computational audio rather than to a change in the fit, so the earbuds remain open-ear in the way AirPods 4 were. The release does not say how AirPods 5 Transparency mode compares with simply removing the earbuds, which is the practical question for an open-ear product.
Adaptive EQ and Personalized Spatial Audio
Two further audio features round out the list. AirPods 5 get next-generation Adaptive EQ, which Apple describes as an upgrade without stating what changed, and Personalized Spatial Audio, which Apple lists without new details.

Battery life with ANC on is up to five hours, one hour more than AirPods 4 with ANC, and up to 22 hours with the case. Apple has not said how Transparency mode or Adaptive Audio affect runtime.
