Apple Watch Series 12 keeps the 42 mm and 46 mm sizes and the $399 starting price of the Series 10, but replaces the S10 chip with the S11, adds a Health Sensing System that reads heart rate every five seconds, and raises Apple’s battery rating from 18 hours to 24. Series 10 stays on Apple’s watchOS 27 compatibility list, so the case for upgrading rests on hardware rather than on losing software support.
Series 10 launched in September 2024 at $399 with the S10 chip, and Series 11 kept that chip a year later, according to Apple’s press releases. Series 12 is therefore the first Series watch since 2024 with a new processor, and the first with new optical and electrical heart sensors. Chip and sensors: what the S11 and the Health Sensing System change
Apple calls the S11 its most powerful wearable chip. Its tech specs list a 64-bit dual-core processor, a 4-core Neural Engine and 64GB of storage, matching Series 10 on storage. The S11 adds a Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment for on-device audio processing, which is the basis for Audio Intelligence: Sound Recognition alerts, Live Rewind for the previous 15 seconds of conversation as text, Siri Recap and Shazam detection. The bigger change is the Health Sensing System. Apple’s press release describes new optical and electrical heart sensors with larger green LEDs, heart rate measured every five seconds all day, and HRV every five minutes in two variants, Recovery HRV and overall HRV. Apple’s 60 times and 24 times frequency claims are stated against Series 11; it has not published a Series 10 figure. Those readings feed the Readiness app, a daily 0 to 10 score with four recommendations from Recover to Go For It.
Battery and charging: 18 hours to 24, and a faster 15-minute top-up
Apple Support rates Series 10 at up to 18 hours of normal use and 36 hours in Low Power Mode. Apple’s tech specs rate Series 12 at up to 24 hours, 38 hours in Low Power Mode and 10 hours of outdoor workout.
Both watches reach 80 percent in about 30 minutes, but the short top-up improved: Apple Support lists 15 minutes for up to 8 hours on Series 10, while Series 12 gets up to 12 hours from 15 minutes and up to 10 hours of sleep tracking from 5 minutes.
Display, materials and what did not change
The display is a wash on paper: both peak at 2000 nits and dim to 1 nit, and Series 12 keeps the 42 mm and 46 mm cases Series 10 introduced, so bands carry over. Series 12 does add Ceramic Shield 2 to the aluminum models, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than Ion-X glass.
Series 12 also brings a ceramic case in Pearl White and Night Blue, at 43 mm and 47 mm and 9.85 mm deep against 9.7 mm for aluminum and titanium. The depth gauge to 6 meters and water temperature sensor that Series 10 introduced remain, as do ECG, Blood Oxygen and the temperature sensor.
watchOS 27 runs on both, so what is Series 12 only?
Apple’s watchOS page lists Series 10 among the models that get the free September 14 update, the same day as iOS 27 on iPhone. That brings Siri AI in beta, the dynamic app grid, the Smart Stack tap gesture, Workout Buddy without a nearby iPhone and perimenopause support in Cycle Tracking to a Series 10. Per Apple’s listings, Series 12 alone gets:
- The Health Sensing System, with five-second heart rate, five-minute HRV and Recovery HRV.
- Audio Intelligence, which Apple ties to the S11’s Secure Exclave.
- The Readiness app and Steps complication, listed under Series 12 and Ultra 4.
- Ceramic cases and Ceramic Shield 2.
What Apple has not said
- Titanium, ceramic and cellular prices for Series 12, and band prices.
- A trade-in value for Series 10; Apple’s Trade In page shows no per-model estimate until you answer condition questions.
- A sensor frequency comparison against Series 10 specifically, or whether Readiness reaches Series 10 through watchOS 27.
Series 12 is available to pre-order now from $399 and reaches stores on Friday, September 18 in the US and more than 50 other countries, according to Apple’s press release. Apple no longer sells Series 10, so the choice for an owner who wants the new sensors is between Series 12 and the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 4, which shares the S11 and the Health Sensing System.
