How to Set Up AirPods 5: Pairing, Head Gestures, Adaptive Audio and Live Translation

AirPods 5 arrive on Friday, September 18 at $129, or $149 with the Wireless Charging Case, and they bring four features that need a minute of setup: pairing, head-gesture replies, Adaptive Audio and Live Translation. Apple’s press release says hands-free Siri AI also needs iOS 27 and an Apple Intelligence iPhone.

This guide walks through each one in the order you will meet them. The steps below come from Apple’s current AirPods support pages, which list AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 and are written for iOS 26. Apple’s AirPods 5 press release confirms head gestures, Adaptive Audio and Live Translation on the new model, but the support pages have not been updated yet, so labels may shift slightly on iOS 27.

How to pair AirPods 5 with your iPhone

Apple’s pairing page needs Bluetooth on and a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Apple has not published the minimum iOS version for AirPods 5; AirPods Pro 3 required iOS 26, and the Siri AI features need iOS 27.

  1. Go to the Home Screen on your iPhone.
  2. With your AirPods in the case, open the lid and hold the case next to your iPhone.
  3. Tap Connect when the setup animation appears.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions for your model.
  5. Set up Siri if prompted.
  6. Tap Done. iCloud then sets the AirPods up on your other devices signed in with the same Apple Account.

If no animation appears, Apple’s page says to double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white, the method it lists for AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3, then go to Settings, Bluetooth, and select the AirPods. Our AirPods 5 announcement coverage has the full spec list.

How to turn on head gestures

Apple’s controls guide describes the two gestures: nod your head up and down to accept a call or reply to a notification, and shake your head side to side to decline or dismiss it.

  1. Wear your AirPods.
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings, then tap your AirPods near the top.
  3. Tap Head Gestures, then turn on Head Gestures.
  4. To use head gestures to respond to Siri, make sure Announce Calls and Announce Notifications are also on.

How to turn on Adaptive Audio

Apple describes Adaptive Audio as a blend of Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency that adjusts to the noise around you. AirPods 5 are the first open-ear AirPods with Apple’s higher level of noise cancellation, which Apple says removes up to 50 percent more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC.

  1. Open Control Center on your iPhone and touch and hold the volume control.
  2. Tap Listening Mode, then tap Adaptive. You can also ask Siri to turn on Adaptive, or press and hold an AirPods stem to cycle through the listening modes.
  3. To adjust how much ambient noise is allowed, go to Settings, Bluetooth, tap the More Info button next to your AirPods, then move the Adaptive Audio slider under Audio.

The same Settings screen holds Personalized Volume, which Apple says adjusts media volume to your surroundings, and Conversation Awareness, which lowers the volume when you start speaking.

How to set up Live Translation

  1. Wear your connected AirPods, go to Settings, tap the AirPods name at the top, then under Translation tap Languages and download the languages you need.
  2. Open the Translate app and tap the Live tab.
  3. Select the language the other person is speaking and the language you want your AirPods to translate it to.
  4. Start translation by pressing and holding the stems on both AirPods at the same time, or say Hey Siri, start Live Translation, or tap Start Translation in the app. Apple notes Adaptive Audio switches on automatically.
  5. Listen to the translation, then reply. Use the Live tab to show a transcript to the other person, or press Play to speak the translation from your iPhone. Tap X to stop.

When both people wear supported AirPods, Apple says each hears the conversation translated into their own language.

If a feature does not work

  • No pairing animation: charge the case, then use the double-tap method above and pair from Settings, Bluetooth.
  • Nods do nothing: Head Gestures is off, or Announce Calls and Announce Notifications are off.
  • Adaptive is missing from Listening Mode: update the AirPods firmware; the option only shows on supported models.
  • Live Translation will not start: check Apple Intelligence is on, the Translate app is installed and the languages are downloaded. In the EU, Siri AI itself is not available at launch, per Apple’s iOS 27 notes.
  • Siri AI stays silent: it needs iOS 27, which ships September 14, and an Apple Intelligence iPhone.

AirPods 5 are on pre-order now from Apple’s Store and reach shops on September 18, the same day as the iPhone 18 Pro.
