If your iPhone drains faster after you install iOS 27 on Monday, September 14, Apple has published nothing that predicts it, measures it or explains it. There is no iOS 27 battery statement of any kind, and no Apple support document that covers what happens to an iPhone in the days after a major update.
What Apple has published is narrower than the question and more useful than it looks. Its own release notes describe index work tied to the move to iOS 27, and its own performance section says three search systems have been rebuilt. Neither is a promise about your battery, and together they are the only published mechanism on the record. iOS 27 ships free on Monday to iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later).

The three Apple notes that actually bear on this
Three lines from Apple, none of them written about battery life, are the closest thing to an explanation that exists.

- The iOS 26.6 release notes say that update “optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27.” That is Apple describing index work as part of the transition, in its own words, weeks before the transition.
- The iOS 27 performance material says Spotlight, Photos and Mail search have been rebuilt, alongside an optimized CPU scheduler and smoother handoffs between Wi-Fi and cellular.
- The iOS 26.6.2 release notes say that update “fixes an issue that prevents downloading a software update over a cellular connection.” That is the only update-mechanics bug Apple has acknowledged in this cycle.
Rebuilding a search index is work, and work draws power. Apple has not said that will cost you battery life, and we are not going to say it on Apple’s behalf. It is simply the only published activity anyone can point at.
Apple’s speed claims, and what each was measured on
The iOS 27 performance numbers are the most quoted figures of the release, and none of them is a battery figure. Each carries its own test conditions.

Apple publishes battery ratings for hardware, not for software. The iPhone 18 Pro is rated at up to 24 hours of typical use and 36 hours of video playback, and the Pro Max at 30 and 45, from testing Apple dates to July 2026 on preproduction units. No equivalent figure exists for what iOS 27 does to an iPhone 13.
Three things you can establish without guessing
- Which tier your iPhone lands in. Apple Intelligence runs on all iPhone 16 models and later plus iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Everything from iPhone 11 to iPhone 15 Plus gets iOS 27 with no on-device model work at all, which makes an Apple Intelligence explanation impossible on those phones.
- Whether you are on the shipping build. Apple issued the iOS 27.0 release candidate, build 24A435, to developers on September 9. That is the build most likely to ship on Monday.
- Whether your problem is the one Apple already fixed. If an older iPhone will not pull the update over cellular, the September 9 software line-up is not the issue: iOS 26.6.2 addressed exactly that, and Wi-Fi sidesteps it.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a release time, a download size, a free space requirement, an install duration, or any statement that iOS 27 is rolled out in stages. It has published no post-update battery guidance, no “About iOS 27 Updates” document and no iOS 27 security content page. Its general update guide still carries a December 5, 2025 date and screenshots that reference iOS 18 and iOS 26.
That absence is worth stating plainly, because every confident number circulating about iOS 27 battery drain this week comes from somewhere other than Apple. The iPhone 18 Pro arrives on Friday, September 18 with iOS 27 already installed, so its owners never see the update at all.
iOS 27 arrives on Monday, September 14. If an “About iOS 27 Updates” support document goes live that day, it will be the first page Apple has published that lists what each iOS 27 release changes, and the first place a battery fix would ever be named.
