The iPhone 18 Pro’s telephoto camera is a 48MP Fusion Telephoto with a 100 mm focal length, an f/2.8 aperture, a tetraprism lens design and 3D sensor-shift optical image stabilization. Apple’s tech specs label it a 4x lens, and it also produces a 12MP 8x crop at 200 mm that Apple calls optical-quality.
None of that was in Apple’s press release, which focused on the main camera’s variable aperture; we noted the gap in our iPhone 18 Pro camera explainer. The tech specs page now gives the full telephoto spec, and this piece breaks down each part of it.

All three lenses use 48MP sensors, so the telephoto is not the lower-resolution camera in the set. The 8x setting is the only place the resolution drops, to 12MP, because it is a center crop rather than a separate lens.

100 mm and 4x: what the focal length means
The 4x label is relative to the 24 mm main camera: 24 mm multiplied by four is 96 mm, and Apple rounds the telephoto to 100 mm. At that length the framing tightens enough for portraits from a few meters away, distant details and subjects you cannot walk closer to.
Because the telephoto sensor is 48MP, Apple can take a 12MP crop from its center and present it as an 8x, 200 mm option. Why f/2.8 matters at 100 mm
The telephoto’s aperture is fixed at f/2.8. That is narrower than the main camera’s widest f/1.48 stop, but it matches one of the main camera’s four stops exactly, so switching between 1x at f/2.8 and 4x keeps exposure behavior consistent.
A long lens with a fixed aperture is where stabilization does the most work, since any hand movement is magnified four times compared with the main camera. That is the reason the telephoto gets a different stabilization system from the other two lenses.
Tetraprism and 3D sensor-shift stabilization
A tetraprism folds the light path so a 100 mm focal length fits inside an 8.75 mm thick phone. Light bounces through the prism several times before reaching the sensor, which is how the lens achieves its reach without a protruding barrel.
Apple’s tech specs pair it with 3D sensor-shift OIS, which moves the sensor itself to counter shake rather than moving lens elements. The 3D label indicates movement on more than the two flat axes; Apple has not published the number of axes or a stabilization performance figure.

Same telephoto on both sizes, none on iPhone Duo
Apple’s tech specs list the same 48MP Fusion Telephoto on the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and the 6.9-inch Pro Max. Both phones also share the 8x optical-quality zoom and the 16x optical-quality zoom range Apple quotes.
The iPhone Duo does not have a telephoto lens at all, which our iPhone Duo camera explainer covers, so the 18 Pro line is Apple’s only 2026 iPhone with a 100 mm option. Apple has not published telephoto figures for the iPhone 17 Pro on the new specs page, so we are not quoting a year-on-year change. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, and the phones ship Friday, September 18.
