iPhone 18 Pro Has Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Apple’s C2 Modem: What the N1 and C2 Chips Actually Do

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max use two Apple-designed wireless chips: the N1, which handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, and the C2 modem for cellular, which Apple says uses 15 percent less energy than the C1X.

Together with the 2-nanometer A20 Pro, that puts Apple silicon in charge of processing, local wireless and cellular on the same phone. Apple did not spend much keynote time on either chip, but they matter for battery life, which is one of the four areas Apple says it focused on in the iPhone 18 Pro announcement.

What the N1 chip handles

The N1 is the chip behind every short-range radio in the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple’s press release lists three standards it supports.

Apple has not published throughput figures or range claims for the N1, so real-world speed comparisons with the iPhone 17 Pro will have to wait for testing.

What the C2 modem does

The C2 is the cellular modem. Apple’s headline claim is efficiency: 15 percent less energy than the C1X, which feeds directly into the battery figures of up to 36 hours of video playback on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max.

The C2 also supports mmWave 5G in the US. Apple’s press release specifies the US for mmWave and has not said whether the higher-frequency 5G bands are supported in other markets.

The modem pairs with Apple’s eSIM-only strategy in 12 countries and regions, including the US, Canada, Japan and Mexico, where the iPhone 18 Pro ships with no SIM tray.

The A20 Pro also gets 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro and a vapor chamber attached directly to the chip with about three times the cooling performance of the previous design.

Why the modem’s energy savings matter

Apple describes the Pro Max’s 45 hours of video playback as up to 30 hours of use on a full charge, and says the smaller iPhone 18 Pro roughly matches last year’s iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple has not broken down how much of that gain comes from the C2 versus the A20 Pro or the battery itself.
