An iPhone 18 Pro is $1,199. Add 8 percent sales tax, one $49 case and three years of AppleCare One at $19.99 a month, and our arithmetic on Apple’s published figures puts the three-year total at $2,063.56 before anything comes back at trade-in.
Every line in that sum is a price Apple publishes. The point is not that the phone is expensive, it is that the sticker covers roughly six dollars in every ten you will actually spend.

This is the ordinary version: one phone, one case, coverage kept for the whole time, bought in a state that charges sales tax.

One qualification on the largest line. AppleCare One covers up to three products, so if an Apple Watch and a set of AirPods sit on the same plan, charging all $719.64 to the phone is the pessimistic reading. The optimistic one is a third of it.
The adapter is the line nobody can complete. Apple’s own claim of 50 percent in around 15 minutes needs a 60W adapter sold separately, and Apple has not published its price, as we noted in our iPhone 18 Pro charging breakdown.
What comes back at the end
Apple’s published trade-in wording is a range: customers trading in an iPhone 13 or later can get $175 to $885 in credit, applied instantly. The $885 top needs an iPhone 17 Pro Max in flawless condition, so it is a ceiling rather than a forecast.
The direction of travel matters more than the ceiling. Apple changed its trade-in values on September 9 and every iPhone payout fell, some by as much as $120. The value recorded for an iPhone 16 Pro went from $630 to $510 on the day the new phones were announced. Those are the values recorded for individual models rather than a table Apple publishes.
Plan on a residual that shrinks, not one that holds. On this three-year sum, a $400 credit in 2029 would still leave roughly $1,660 spent.
Paying monthly does not change the total
Apple Card Monthly Installments is 0 percent APR over 24 months. At $49.95 a month that is $1,198.80, which is the price of the phone, so the financing itself costs nothing. Apple also pays 3 percent Daily Cash up front, which is $35.97 on a $1,199 phone. The condition is that Apple requires AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at checkout, and prepaid plans are not supported.
Apple Upgrade, the Klarna-run lease that replaced the iPhone Upgrade Program in July, is $34.99 a month over 24 months for a 256GB iPhone 18 Pro. That is $839.76 over two years, and at the end you do not own the phone. Apple’s options are to upgrade, buy it outright with a one-time payment, or return it, and doing nothing converts the lease to a month-to-month arrangement for up to six months.
The lease also drops AppleCare, which the old programme included. Budget for coverage separately or the monthly figure is not comparing like with like. Our look at Apple’s monthly pricing sets the options side by side.
Where the number actually moves
- Sales tax. Delaware, New Hampshire and Oregon charge no sales tax at all, which removes $95.92 from this sum at an 8 percent rate. Alaska and Montana have no statewide rate but permit local ones.
- The military discount. Apple’s Veterans and Military storefront takes 10 percent off, which is $119.90 here. The catch Apple states is that Apple Card Monthly Installments and Apple Upgrade are not available in that storefront, so it is the discount or the financing.
- Trade-in timing. Apple credit is instant at the point of sale. Carrier credit arrives as 24 to 36 monthly bill credits and stops if you leave.
- Storage. The 512GB tier is $1,399, so the step up adds $200 to the first line and about $16 to the tax line.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published a per-device AppleCare+ price for iPhone 18 Pro, any out-of-warranty repair or service fee for it, or a price for the 60W-class adapter its charging claim depends on. Verizon has published no iPhone 18 Pro offer, and AT&T’s own site carries none either, so no carrier number belongs in a three-year sum yet.
Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, and the phone ships on Friday, September 18.
