On Apple’s tech specs, the iPhone 18 Pro camera system differs from the iPhone 17 Pro’s in exactly one lens: the 48MP Fusion main camera trades a fixed f/1.78 aperture for a variable one with four stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. The Ultra Wide, the 4x tetraprism telephoto, the 8x optical-quality crop, the 18MP front camera and the top video modes are listed identically on both phones.
That makes this the narrowest camera upgrade decision Apple has offered a Pro owner in a while, and also one of the more interesting, because the single change reaches into exposure, depth of field and low light at the same time. Here is the full line-by-line comparison, followed by what the aperture change actually buys.

What changes: four aperture stops on the main camera
Apple’s tech specs list the 18 Pro’s main camera at 24 mm with a variable aperture of f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, built from six laser-cut blades according to Apple’s press release. The 17 Pro’s main camera on Apple’s compare page is 24 mm at a fixed f/1.78. The widest new stop lets in more light than the old lens; the narrowest, f/4.0, keeps more of a scene in focus than the 17 Pro can manage optically.

Apple’s press release ties three software features to the new lens: manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app, Smart Focus subject tracking and faster Night mode. What stayed the same: Ultra Wide, telephoto and selfie
The Ultra Wide is a 48MP Fusion camera at 13 mm f/2.2 with a 120-degree field of view on the 18 Pro, and Apple’s compare page lists the 17 Pro’s at the same 48MP, 13 mm and f/2.2. Apple’s press release for the 18 Pro announced no change here.
The telephoto is likewise unchanged on the spec sheet: a 48MP 4x tetraprism at 100 mm f/2.8 on both, with the 18 Pro’s tech specs adding 3D sensor-shift OIS and a 12MP optical-quality 8x crop at 200 mm. Apple’s compare page lists the same 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x optical zoom steps for both phones. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage unit at f/1.9 on each, with autofocus called out on the 18 Pro’s specs.
Video: matching formats, new effects
Both phones record 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps and list ProRes RAW, Genlock and Apple Log 2 on Apple’s spec pages. The 18 Pro’s tech specs also list Cinematic mode up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps, ProRes up to 4K at 120 fps with external recording, and spatial video at 1080p at 30 fps; we could not confirm the matching rows for the 17 Pro from Apple’s pages.
Apple’s press release lists new video features for the 18 Pro: Cinematic effects up to 60 fps, 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse and enhanced Audio Mix with music isolation. Apple has not said whether any of these come to the 17 Pro through iOS 27.

Photographic Styles and Apple Reference Image
Apple’s press release describes upgraded Photographic Styles with texture and grain controls on the 18 Pro. Apple Reference Image, which stores an untouched original with verification metadata alongside your edits so a photo can be shown to come from a real capture, is presented as an iPhone 18 Pro feature in the release and also appears on Apple’s iOS 27 page, which lists it among the update’s features. iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14, so 17 Pro owners may see it then; Apple has not confirmed device requirements.
The camera-only verdict for 17 Pro owners
If you shoot mostly at 2x, 4x or 8x, or mostly selfies, the 18 Pro changes nothing on paper. If you shoot at 1x in low light, or want physical control over depth of field, the variable aperture is the whole upgrade, and it is a real one. What Apple has not said
- Whether Smart Focus, faster Night mode, texture and grain controls or music isolation reach the iPhone 17 Pro through iOS 27.
- Whether the sensors behind the unchanged lens specs are new; Apple’s pages list resolution, focal length and aperture only.
- Digital zoom range beyond 8x for the 18 Pro, which the tech specs page does not specify.
