iPhone Pro Telephoto History: 3x, 5x, 4x Tetraprism and Now 8x Optical-Quality

The iPhone 18 Pro’s telephoto is a 48MP Fusion camera at 100 mm, a 4x lens that Apple also crops to a 12MP 8x shot at 200 mm, according to Apple’s tech specs. That is the same design as the iPhone 17 Pro, and it closes a five-year run in which Apple’s Pro telephoto went from 3x, to 5x on the biggest models, to 4x with an 8x optical-quality crop.

Apple’s press release did not announce any change to the telephoto this year; the headline camera change is the variable-aperture main camera, covered in our iPhone 18 Pro camera explainer. The telephoto story is about how Apple got to 8x, and why the number on the lens went down from 5x to 4x along the way.

2021 to 2024: from 3x to the 5x tetraprism

The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max carried a 12MP f/2.8 telephoto that Apple described as 3x optical zoom in, with 2x optical zoom out from the Ultra Wide for a 6x optical range. Apple’s spec page for those models gives no focal length in millimeters.

The iPhone 14 Pro kept the 3x lens, now listed at 77 mm, and added something that matters for this story: a 48MP main camera. Apple used that sensor to offer a 12MP 2x telephoto at 48 mm without a separate lens. The iPhone 15 Pro carried the same 77 mm 3x lens and the same 2x crop.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max was the first Pro with a tetraprism telephoto, a folded design that fits a longer 120 mm lens into the phone. It was 12MP at f/2.8, and Apple’s stated range grew to 10x. The smaller 15 Pro stayed at 3x.

A year later the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max both received the 5x 120 mm tetraprism, so for one generation the two sizes matched. If you own a 16 Pro, our 18 Pro vs 16 Pro guide covers everything else that changed; the 15 Pro guide does the same for 2023 owners.

2025 to 2026: 4x at 100 mm with an 8x crop

The iPhone 17 Pro changed the approach. The telephoto became a 48MP Fusion camera at 100 mm, which Apple calls 4x, shorter than the 120 mm 5x lens before it. The gain came from the sensor: with 48MP behind the lens, Apple could crop to a 12MP 8x image at 200 mm, and it listed that 8x as optical-quality zoom. The range grew from 10x to 16x.

The iPhone 18 Pro repeats that design line for line on Apple’s tech specs: 48MP Fusion Telephoto, 100 mm, f/2.8, tetraprism, 3D sensor-shift optical image stabilization, with the 12MP 8x crop at 200 mm. Apple’s summary is 8x optical-quality zoom in, 2x optical zoom out and a 16x optical-quality zoom range. Our 18 Pro vs 17 Pro comparison lists what did change.

What optical-quality means

Apple uses optical-quality for a crop taken from the center of a 48MP sensor and output at 12MP, rather than a digital enlargement. On the iPhone 18 Pro there are two such crops: 2x at 48 mm from the 24 mm main camera and 8x at 200 mm from the 100 mm telephoto. The five focal lengths Apple lists are 13 mm, 24 mm, 48 mm, 100 mm and 200 mm.

The trade-off is resolution. A true optical shot at 4x uses the full 48MP telephoto sensor; the 8x crop delivers 12MP. The iPhone Duo, by contrast, has no telephoto at all and relies on a 2x crop, as our iPhone Duo camera explainer describes.

What Apple has not said

  • Apple’s tech specs summary for the iPhone 18 Pro does not state a maximum digital zoom figure.
  • Apple has not published sensor sizes for any Pro telephoto.
  • Apple has not said whether the 18 Pro telephoto hardware differs from the 17 Pro beyond the identical spec line.
  • Apple’s spec pages for the iPhone 13 Pro do not give focal lengths in millimeters.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the 18 Pro Max at $1,299. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on Friday, September 18 in more than 65 countries.
