The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299, $100 more than last year’s models, and both bring the A20 Pro chip, a variable aperture main camera and longer battery life. Whether that is worth it depends on which iPhone you own now.
The design carries over from the iPhone 17 Pro generation with a new rear finish, so almost everything new is inside the phone. Here is what Apple announced for the iPhone 18 Pro and how it stacks up for owners of the last three Pro models.
What is new in iPhone 18 Pro
- A20 Pro, Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip, with a GPU up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro and double the AI processing
- 48MP Fusion main camera with a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4 and manual aperture and shutter controls
- Up to 36 hours of video playback on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max, with the Pro roughly matching last year’s 17 Pro Max
- Smaller Dynamic Island showing up to three Live Activities at once
- N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, plus the C2 modem with 15 percent less energy use than C1X
- A new vapor chamber with about three times the cooling performance of the prior design
- A 2TB storage option for the first time, and Apple Reference Image for verifying real photos
iPhone 17 Pro owners: probably wait
The iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro share the same design and the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes. What changes is the chip, the variable aperture, the battery and the Dynamic Island, and the price goes up by $100.

If the variable aperture or the longer battery is the thing you have been waiting for, the upgrade makes sense. Otherwise, a one-year-old Pro remains close enough that the money is better kept, and iPhone 17 Pro deals may improve now that it has been replaced.
iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro owners: the case is stronger
Those models use older A-series chips and fixed-aperture cameras, so the iPhone 18 Pro brings a multi-generation jump in processing and the first variable aperture on an iPhone camera. Apple has not published direct comparisons with those models, so we will not put numbers on the gap.
Battery is the other argument. Apple says the smaller iPhone 18 Pro now roughly matches the iPhone 17 Pro Max, so a 15 Pro or 16 Pro owner moving to the smaller phone gets a size they know with battery life that was previously reserved for the larger model.
Two more changes apply regardless of what you own: 2TB storage is available for the first time, and Black returns as a color after the 17 Pro skipped it.
What to do next
Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on Friday, September 18. Apple has not published prices for the 512GB, 1TB or 2TB tiers, so the true cost of a like-for-like upgrade is not known for anyone above the base configuration.
