A student buying a Mac should buy it from Apple’s Education Store and buy it before Thursday, September 24, which is when Apple’s Back to School offer ends. If the work happens at a desk, the pick is the Mac mini with M6 at $799 education, against $899 on the consumer store.
The catch is the most expensive detail in this whole decision. Apple’s Back to School terms exclude Mac mini and every desktop Mac from the gift card, so the cheapest new Mac takes the education discount and gives up the $100 or $150 Apple Gift Card that a notebook would earn. For a student who has to carry the machine, that changes the order of the shortlist.

The verdict: desk or backpack decides it
If the student has a desk, a screen and no need to carry a computer between buildings, the Mac mini with M6 at $799 is the clearest value in Apple’s current lineup, because it is the machine Apple gave its newest-generation chip. Apple puts the M6 at up to 40 percent faster on CPU than the chip it replaces, with up to 2x faster graphics and up to 4x faster AI performance than M4, and 16GB of unified memory as standard with a 32GB option. If the machine has to travel, the gift card swings it. Apple’s Back to School terms pay $150 with an eligible MacBook Pro and $100 with an eligible MacBook Air, and that credit stacks on top of education pricing. Apple publishes the education prices for those notebooks only on its Education Store listings, so this guide does not quote a figure for them, but the direction is not in doubt: the gift card exists on notebooks and does not exist on the mini.
The $100 the Mac mini gives up, and the timing trap
There is a second problem with recommending the mini to a student this month. The Mac mini with M6 does not reach general sale until Tuesday, September 22, two days before the Back to School window closes on September 24. Pre-orders opened on August 25, so the machine can be ordered now, but since desktop Macs are excluded from the gift card anyway, the timing only matters if a student is weighing the mini against a notebook and wants both offers in the same basket. Apple has not published whether a pre-order placed inside the window qualifies for anything that ends inside it.

Studio Display is $1,599, or $1,499 education, and Studio Display XDR is $3,299, or $3,199 education. Those are the figures that decide whether a desktop is genuinely the cheaper route, because a mini with an Apple display costs more than most notebooks.
Three catches that cost students money
- Rosetta ends with macOS 27. Apple told developers on September 1 that macOS 27 is the final release to support it, and that from macOS 28 it survives only for “certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks”. If a course depends on Intel-only software, check it now rather than in second year.
- Refurbished Macs do not get a new battery. Apple’s own refurbished pages promise savings of up to 15 percent, a one-year limited warranty and AppleCare eligibility, but the line about a new battery and outer shell applies to its iOS devices, not to Macs.
- Apple Upgrade is a lease, not ownership. Mac starts at $24.99 a month over 24 or 36 months, the lease is provided by Klarna, it is limited to United States residents aged 18 or over, and AppleCare is not included. What happens at the end of the term if the customer does nothing is a conversion to a month-to-month lease for up to six months.
One more piece of arithmetic favours students this month. Trade-in values recorded for Mac hardware went up on September 9 while every iPhone value fell, with figures recorded of $705 for a MacBook Air, $1,315 for a MacBook Pro, $620 for a Mac mini and $385 for an iMac. Apple publishes a range rather than a per-model table, so treat those as values recorded rather than prices Apple has printed.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published education prices for its notebooks in the announcements behind this guide, so none appear here. It has not published which specific MacBook and iPad models count as eligible for the gift card beyond the category names, nor per-device AppleCare+ prices for the current generation. It has published no test conditions for any M6 or M5 performance figure. Its macOS 27 and Apple Intelligence device lists both name a MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro chip, and there is no published price or configuration for it in this material.
Two dates decide this purchase. macOS 27 Golden Gate arrives free on Monday, September 14, alongside iOS 27, and Apple’s Back to School window closes on Thursday, September 24, two days after Mac mini and Mac Studio reach general sale on Tuesday, September 22.
