How to Fix Cellular Data Not Working in iOS 26.2

cellular data iphone

With iOS 26.2, many users report that mobile data either stops working completely or feels unreliable, especially right after updating. This isn’t new, every major iOS release comes with a wave of reports about signal drops, missing 5G, or data not loading even when the bars are full.

The reasons are usually a mix of software glitches, outdated carrier settings, or conflicts with new features like Liquid Glass animations and Adaptive Power Mode that change how aggressively iOS manages system resources.

The good news: you don’t need to head straight to the Apple Store. Below are practical steps to diagnose and fix iOS 26.2 cellular data issues, plus tips on preventing them from coming back.

Why iOS 26.2 can kill your data (temporarily)

  • Background churn after an update: Spotlight, Photos, and system services reindex. Radios can feel flaky while that’s happening.
  • Carrier settings mismatch: Your carrier profile may not have applied cleanly.
  • eSIM/SIM hiccups: Activation can get stuck, especially on dual-SIM setups.
  • Network settings drift: Old APN, DNS, or VPN profiles can interfere.
  • Thermal throttling: If the phone is running hot, radios slow down to protect hardware. See our iOS 26.2 overheating fixes.
  • Actual account issues: Out of data, late bill, regional outage.

Quick checks (takes 60 seconds)

  1. Confirm Cellular Data is ON
Settings → Cellular (Mobile Data) → Cellular Data: ON.
  2. Airplane Mode reset
Switch on Airplane Mode for 20 seconds, then off.
  3. Restart
Power off → wait 15 seconds → power on.

If data wakes up here, you’re done.

Step-by-step fixes (do these in order)

1) Make sure it’s not Wi-Fi masking the issue

Turn Wi-Fi off for a moment and try loading a site on cellular only.

If it works with Wi-Fi off, you might be battling a weak Wi-Fi network. Turn on Wi-Fi Assist: Settings → CellularWi-Fi Assist.

2) Check you’re on the right line (Dual SIM/eSIM)

  • Settings → CellularCellular Data → pick the correct line.
  • If you used Allow Cellular Data Switching, try turning it off temporarily.

3) Toggle 5G/4G modes

  • Settings → CellularCellular Data OptionsVoice & Data.
  • Switch from 5G Auto to LTE/4G. If LTE works, the issue is 5G-specific in your area.

4) Data Roaming and region

  • Traveling? Settings → CellularCellular Data OptionsData Roaming: turn ON.
  • If you’re home, leave roaming OFF.

5) Update carrier settings

  • Settings → GeneralAbout.
  • Wait 10–15 seconds; if a Carrier Settings Update prompt appears, install it.

6) Remove and reseat the SIM (or refresh eSIM)

  • Physical SIM: eject, check for dust, reinsert.
  • eSIM: Settings → Cellular → tap your plan → Remove eSIM, then add it back using your carrier’s QR or app. Only do this if you have credentials or carrier support on hand.

7) Reset Network Settings

  • Settings → GeneralTransfer or Reset iPhoneResetReset Network Settings.
  • You’ll lose saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth pairings; rejoin Wi-Fi after.

8) Nuke blockers: VPN, profiles, DNS

  • Go to Settings → VPN & Device Management: remove any profiles you don’t need.
  • Turn off VPN apps and DNS filters to test.

9) Update iOS again

Sometimes the .1 release needs a .2 or .3 hotfix for modem firmware. Go to Settings → GeneralSoftware Update. If you can’t see the update, check out our troubleshooting guides for iOS 26.2 update not showing up andiPhone is stuck on “Update Requested”.

10) Call your carrier

Ask about: plan status, local outages, IMEI restrictions, and whether your account has the correct provisioning for 5G/VoLTE.

Extra fixes that help more than you’d think

  • Turn off Low Data Mode: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Low Data Mode OFF.
  • Disable Personal Hotspot to rule it out: Settings → Personal Hotspot OFF.
  • Check APN (for smaller carriers): Settings → CellularCellular Data Network. If your carrier gave you APN fields, re-enter them exactly.
  • Temperature check: If the phone’s warm, cool it down. Thermal throttling kills radio performance.
  • Battery strain can mimic data slowdowns. If your phone’s constantly indexing or draining, try these battery drain tips.

FAQs

Why did data die right after I updated?

Your phone re-provisions radios and reindexes system data post-update. Add a shaky carrier profile and you get a temporary outage. Usually resolves with an Airplane Mode toggle, restart, carrier update, or network reset.

My phone says 5G, but nothing loads.

That’s a provisioning or tower issue. Switch to LTE/4G in Voice & Data and retest. If LTE works, contact your carrier to fix 5G on your line.

Do I need to replace my SIM?

If it’s old or damaged, yes. eSIM users can delete and re-add the plan; physical SIM users can get a replacement from the carrier.

Could this be an iOS 26.2 bug?

Possibly. Check our live tracker: All reported iOS 26.2 bugs and fixes. If a modem bug is widespread, Apple typically pushes a quick patch.

Should I update again or wait?

If Apple ships a point release addressing modem stability, update. If your updater misbehaves, try these:

Can’t update to iOS 26.2

Tips to keep cellular stable

  • Keep a few GB of free storage; crowded storage makes everything worse.
  • Avoid running hot. If the phone heats up during navigation or hotspots, give it a break. Start with our overheating guide.
  • Don’t stack VPN, ad blockers, and DNS filters until you’ve confirmed data is healthy. Add them back one at a time.

  • I was having crazy and severe network issues, Cellular and WiFi generally just NOT working whatsoever ever since I updated to IOS 26 on September 18th. I have the 15 Pro Max with eSIM only and all related searched up suggestions would just be to “flip the SIM and that fixes the issue” which obviously isn’t viable for me. The only suggestion that genuinely fixed my frustratingly slow phone was the suggestion to remove VPN profiles! I never use VPNs often, but I still had the profiles on my phone. Immediately after removing them the issue was resolved, and my phone is as quick as it used to be! I’m so pleased and relieved with the end result these helpful tips and potential solutions. Overall, this has a bunch of great advice, and I am thrilled that I didn’t have to actually go to the Apple store to resolve this surprisingly easy issue.

    1. Omg same! I constantly had to switch between my WiFi and cellular data and I KNOW it’s not my internet, because my other devices work fine. It’s been so annoying the past few days but my solution was opposite of yours— adding a VPN fixed my connectivity issues. I’m glad you got yours to resolve! This update is just hella weird they need to get their crap together
